Halal/kosher meat in french speaking part of Switzerland

Hi All

I just arrived in Switzerland less than 2 weeks ago and would like to know where I can purchase halal meat especially in Rolle, Nyon and Gland. I read in some articles that supermarkets like COOP and Manor have a selection of halal/kosher meat but I am not sure how I can tell from the label whether it is Kosher/halal (as my french is really not that good).

Also, do all COOP and Manor carry halal items? How about migros?

Many thanks in advance.

Best idea is to try turkish and south Asian stores. It is expensive though. You will get frozen chicken breasts at south Asian stores and maybe fresh meat at the Turkish ones.

I find it in Neuchatel and Neuchatel is tiny, so you shouldn't have a problem Also a quick drive to France might prove easier.

Remember that Slaughtering by Halal and Kosher methods is illegal in Switzerland since you have to stun the animal before it is slaughtered in Switzerland. Therefore all halal and Kosher meat you see is imported and not of the best quality! In the supermarkets if you see something imported from Brazil you can pretty much guarantee is it halal though.

You can easily get good halal meat in Lausanne. It's 50mtrs from the main station.

http://www.swisshallal.ch/

This is the best place i could find during the last 3 years of my stay in Vaud. It's on the Avenue Louis Ruchonnet. Actually there are two shops on the same street.

If you are very particular about the halaal then better buy it from a proper halaal shop and not from Coop and Migros. Things from Brazil doesn't necessarily mean halaal unless it is confirmed by the store or there is a stamp on it. But as i said, if you are particular then be careful and trust a shop which only deals in them and not mixing stuff.

HI,
I heard that all new zealand lamb produce is actually halal? It's because they actually use both methods - they stun, then slit using the knife. it's recently been approved by the Halal food authority in the UK. However a bit of research is probably needed to confirm.

From Rolle it is not so far to the Paquis quarter in Geneva with its many Maghrebine butcheries and groceries. And to support the statement of Pashosh above, shops which are Kosher ARE Halal. "Kosher" is in fact, primarily if "levels 2 and 3" are applied (Pashosh for sure can tell you the differences about it), far more strict than Halal, except in regard to strictist interpretation of alcohol.
