Where to get natural products in Zurich?

Hi all,

I'm new here from San Francisco and looking for a health store or some other natural foods/body care products store to get things like witch hazel, organic coconut oil, essential oils and shampoo without chemicals or fragrances. Surely such a place exists in Zurich?

Thanks!

and the above mentioned Müller shops.

Müller has more branches, but Egli has a bit more choice. In Zurich, I recommend the Stauffacher branch - they have the largest selection of both foods and body care products. The shop at Hauptbahnhof has more relaxed opening hours, though.
Most of the staff speaks a decent English (the few times I heard someone ask in English).

Farfalla is also very good, with a wide range of products easily found throughout the country.
The quality is really tustworthy and while some things are a little more expensive, I feel it is worth it. They also have an online shop.

Weleda products are also rather good and are readily available in Coop, chemist shops and most "reform" /health shops, not overly expensive either

It amused me that in all the KTipp tests of food products such as Olive oil etc, the brands stocked by the reform houses are twice the price (at least), of any other and invariably come out at the bottom of the test for taste.

any recommendations on health food stores in Zurich?

I moved to ZH in May from the US and just recently I started looking for health food stores. I miss Whole Foods and Trader Joe that offer wide range of organic and high quality vitamins and supplements at relatively inexpensive prices. My feeling is that shopping at a typical aphoteke is similar to Walgreens or CVS. Any recommendations on quality health food stores in Zurich with a knowledgeable staff?

ThanX,
Tatiana

Re: Where to get natural products in Zurich?

Well, the primary course of action is to hold a mock funeral for your love of WFM and TJ's (and Wegman's, for those who know it), because nothing here compares.

That said, the suggestions above are pretty sound. There's an old-school health food store in Wädenswil that's been open for decades, right near the train station, if you're looking for a non-chain store.

Mind you, even non-organic vitamins and supplements cost a fortune here, the organic is beyond outrageous. Bring it from USA if you can.

Re: Where to get natural products in Zurich?

There is a health food store in the main Zurich train station (HB) that has a fairly decent selection of natural beauty products as well as some natural foods. I can't remember the name of that store, though, so I apologize if it was already mentioned in one of the posts above.

"Whole Foods" and "relatively inexpensive prices" in the same sentence

Another solution is to grow your own and learn how to foray in the countryside. Mushroom, berries, hazel and walnuts are a-plenty now- enjoy.

Trader Joe is a subsidiary of Aldi - which also stocks organic products in Switzerland at reasonable prices.

Sure. And keep a sheep on your balcony to have you own wool.

I'm also new, but I was in the Banhoff yesterday and I saw a summer market with a bunch of natural and local products... I don't know if this helps at all, but worth it to check out!

Not exactly.

There are two Aldi companies, each owned by one of the Albrecht brothers: Aldi Nord (northern Germany), and Aldi Süd (southern Germany, Switzerland, and USA, among others).

Trader Joe's has, for decades, belonged to the same holding company (or something like that) as Aldi Nord. Aldi Nord actually carries some TJ's-branded products!

So yes, TJ's belongs to an Aldi, but not the one we deal with here.

Re: any recommendations on health food stores in Zurich?

According to Wiki, it was bought by Aldi Nord in 1979. My understanding was that a trust controls the Nord and Sued Aldi arms, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Apparently the two Albrecht brothers--both reclusive--each control an arm.

Fascinating business story though--a bit like Lindt and Spruengli and their common roots.
