Coop in Sihl City (Zürich) now has selection of English food. The end of one of the aisles. Never before have I seen such a barren space in Coop. Bar a few mushy peas on the bottom shelf, some oxo cubes and a couple of containers of Bisto, they were completely sold out. Here's hoping for a bit of expansion.

I'm hoping for lucozade, but I know that's a long shot.

I was at "my" Coop today and noticed they'd sold their mushy peas quite well. I wonder if Mirfield bought them all.

Also, I'd picked up another packet of their version of English Muffins (not-so-slathered with butter, tyvm Economisto, my poor tummy can't handle it) along with the new English brand of Orange Marmalade and it did hit the spot! Next is to use them to make some "Egg McMuffins" for breakfast on Sunday.

So far as the bit I've bolded in the quote... hopefully when they see how much of this stuff they sell, they will be inclined to stock more and perhaps stock a wider variety of products. We'll see though.

Re: "UK Food Find" Basel Coop

Must admit I got quite excited at discovering the mushy peas . We had fish, proper chips and mushy peas for dinner last night and I sooooooo enjoyed it. But I did only get one tin so I'm not responsible for the empty shelves at Sihl City, but I think word has spread.

If you're willing to pay the premium then this place sells Lucozade (along with other UK and US favorites).

I thought to give a "heads up" as I noticed something new when I went to the Coop at Volta Center today...

One of the "end cap" displays near the frozen foods has some food from UK including mint jelly, orange marmalade, oxo stock cubes and stuffing mix (other stuff too that I'm forgetting ).

I'm thinking to get some stuffing mix later, even though it's probably not exactly the same as I'd get in the US for Thanksgiving, hopefully it is close enough.
I really don't understand the obsession with Oxo stock cubes or any stock cube for that matter, they are loaded with salt and msg. But people got sold on their convenience. It's easy and cheap to make your own stuffing mix.

Thanks for the heads up on this. Sent the other half to COOP in Neuchatel (Maladières) for a recky!(don't know how to spell this one) and they have all the stuff there too. I can cross the gravy granules, mint sauce and mushy peas off my list of things to bulk buy beforez moving now I'm sure the packers will be delighted to have less stuff to pack as we seem to accumulated an enormous volume over the years

Socialan has made some interesting contributions
Re: "UK Food Find" Basel Coop

I feel like a good citizen - I rushed home from Coop, eager to log on and "tell the world" that Coop have had a stroke of genius and somehow targetted (nearly) all the missing items Brits need - and even in my excitement I remembered to search to check if someone had beaten me to it......

My shopping trip today included buying Roses' Lime Marmalade, Branston, Oxo, Bisto, Apple sauce, Mint sauce, Traditional Pickled Onions, Paxo stuffing and tube of Colemans' mustard. These are the precise items I used to crave and stock up on whenever visiting UK. (And of course Tetleys Teabags from Migros).

It's enought to make you think that Tesco loyalty cards share with Coop that they have this small number of odd customers who visit their stores 2-3 times a year and buy 3 x my shopping list above?

So if we clear the shelves quickly, they'll realised they're onto something and keep them in stock - do your bit for Queen and Country....and enjoy

Keep your eyes open, often you find Bird's custard powder in Asian food shops.

Re: "UK Food Find" Basel Coop

Fantastic - thank you everyone!! I shipped stuffing, bisto (various), mushy peas, etc. when I moved in July, thinking there was no way I'd get them here, and have been rationing! I thought I'd have to figure out how to bake my own muffins, so am SO glad to hear I can get them

I was raised on Mrs Balls Chilli and Mrs Balls Mango chutneys. They're South African and awesome.
Just got round to trying the chilli chutney with a pie.

OMG, how have I lived without Mrs H. S. Ball before? That stuff is bloody gorgeous!

Yup - I eat it with everything. Try it with cold roast chicken and roasties

Great find Was it dessert jelly or the kind you serve with lamb?
Mint dessert jelly?

Has anyone had that ever? If they did surely it would be home made or in some kind of vaguely haute restaurant.

Wow, they got loads in that section, apart from the few odd ones (like bagels) we got jams, curds and marmalade. Nice selection of tea, but no "everyday" tetleys or pg tips. Weetabix

Biscuits, including digestives, shortbreads and hob nobs.

Bisto gravies and OXO stock cubes.

Branston Pickle (Hurrah!), apple + mint sauce, colmans english mustard, and chutney

That's basically the contents of my suitcase from a trip home.

Where the curry sauce?
They've had curry sauces of various types for years in the Basel Marktplatz Coop.

Oh, I'm all in favour of MSG sometimes . . . normally you get a big dose of umami from the parmesan though.

Rather than Oxo, try using some of the fond de veau you can find in shops here.

I found Birds Custard powder in the Orell Fussli English book shop in Zurich when I first got here... random I know.

As everyone else has said, three cheers for Coop selling Mrs Balls but I'm not joining in on the mushy peas front. At risk of being shouted down I am going to say eugh! English friend I was with in Coop agrees so I'm not the only one to be scared mushy peas have followed me here!

Mint jelly served with lamb!!! Now, if only I could easily buy a great big leg of lamb for a fabulous Sunday roast......
If you are looking for dessert jelly, then Coop sells boxes of Hartley's Jelly.
