It would be interesting to find out how Krati the OP thinks about it.
Is it just a fad or a talebanesque persuasion or something in the middle.
And what lays behind the matter.

But why does the OP have to explain themselves? If they choose to be veggie then thats their right.

Re: Is raising children as vegetarians/vegans/fruitarians a form of child abuse?

You donīt "raise" children to be vegetarians, you simply make sure they eat healthier food than those kids who eat what they want all the time.

When I was a kid I ate everything including meat, somewhere along the line I decided I didnīt really like the thought of eating meat and I gradually gave it up completley when I was 12.

No one forced anything on me nor did they force me to eat meat.
Until certain age of your child you should silmpy make sure that the food is healthy. He/she will decide if eating meat is something they want/need anyway.

Re: Is raising children as vegetarians/vegans/fruitarians a form of child abuse?

No, if what they are getting is nutritious enough, which it is.

A quick story, I thought the 3 year old animal lover was going to choose to be vegetarian recently. When we told him he was eating cow, he sat back, looked totally horrified and was deep in thought for a minute. He then just sat forward again said 'Well I like it' and tucked back in.

I don't mind either way, it's up to them, plenty of alternatives

After all you always had the opportunity to eat meat. This is discussing the fact that some vegetarians deny their children that option.

Re: Is raising children as vegetarians/vegans/fruitarians a form of child abuse?

My take on it is that I find it hard enough to make sure my child gets the full range of nutrients on a full diet. I don't want to close down my options of food groups because at least if he's eating a bit of everything, he's getting the corresponding good stuff.

If he didn't eat meat or fish I'd be bothered he wasn't getting enough iron or protein. I think you have to eat a wheelbarrow load of spinach if you want to get the same iron as you'd get in a small serving of lean beef, for example.

This period in a child's life is the crucial time for forming the building blocks of the rest of their life. I would feel remiss as a parent if I felt I wasn't giving him the best chance now.

My other feeling is that at least we are lucky enough to have the choice of whether we feed our kids a full diet or a reduced one (vegi, vegan or whatever). Parents in other parts of the world are struggling to rub two rice grains together.

Okay, I will something re logic. We have people here making the absolutely ridiculous statement that you should put different kinds of food in front of your kids and let them choose. This is absurd simply on a logical level in that there are millions of types of food out there. So shouldn't you put everything possible in front of them to let them make a proper choice. It's a dumb statement.

What parents should do is ensure their kids are given healthy foods. Vegetarian is one possibility.

I think proper serious veggies who are doing it for their own right reasons will at most be eating a sensible diet. I am sure they look at our diets and shake their heads. I fail to see how meat eaters can criticize, I bet many non veggies here have poor diets and don't eat enough fruit and veg.

I am more concerned with the parents that shove fast food down their kids necks not veggie food
But that is the point we are not meat eaters, we (humans) "eat" meat true but a full meat diet would kill us in the end, apart from that your farts would peel the chrome off a hub-cap.
Humans, like pigs are omnivores to swing too far to the right or the left is not for us.

Fully agree Nicky, but that is the mis-use of the resource "meat."

It is certainly possible to serve up a vegan diet which is at least as nutritious as any reasonable meat diet. However, it does require care to ensure that certain dietary minimums are met. In many countries meat is used more as a seasoning than a main course, and, for example, the Japanese have a rather long life expectancy.

For us (me) for one to be able to understand better. Hacking on the OP without knowing the background is just that.

I am disagreeing with the statement this thread is trying to make - child abuse is not something you should be trying to use in this context, itīs wrong on so many levels.
My own personal experience was there just to back up the thought that meat is not a necessity in childīs diet - my blood work results were always better than anyone elses in my class as a kid, no one but me was a vegetarian (doesnīt prove anything, Iīm just telling it how it is) my health is great (thank God) and once again - comparing this with child abuse is disgusting and simply ignorant.

At age 12, your brain is pretty much formed. That's when you said you gave up meat.

It's in those very early years of a child's life (0-6) that it's really important to get all the correct nutrients. One easy way of doing this is to feed your child meat and fish and dairy products along with vegetables etc.
It can be done on a vegetarian diet but it is much more difficult and greater care and thought needs to be given. I've no idea about a fruitarian diet - I should think not.

True. Also for the fact that I'd guess most kids would pick chocolate ice cream most of the time.

All else being equal, vegetarianism isn't as healthy as omnivorous food lifestyle. It's very hard to ingest all 9 essential amino acids as a vegetarian, and while it's possible, it's not the easiest way to live life. Our bodies have evolved to eat animal protein and unless a child actually eats amaranyth, soya and quinoa multiple times per day, they probably will be nutrient deficient.

Moreover, it is poor logic to say that vegetarians have a longer lifespan, so vegetarianism must be healthier. People with OCD have a longer lifespan too, but it's not something a lot of people wish they were. Those people who are vegetarian are self aware enough and have sufficient self restraint that they probably don't indulge in fast food as much, and are probably less likely to smoke. Those same individuals would probably live longer if they ate more high quality protein.

There is also the cultural aspect to consider. Unlike growing up in southern India, in the West () you are needlessly isolating your child.

Moreover, I find eating organic meat to be beneficial to the animal. Without my demand for the stuff, the animal would never have existed in the first place, had a reasonably nice life, and then died (as we all do) in a relatively pain free way. If nobody wore leather or ate beef, how many cows would there be in the world? 10?

While it is true that we all will inevitably pass on prejudices to our children, that means (rather than is an argument against) that each prejudice is an element of child cruelty. I believe the unattainable goal would be to base all our child rearing decisions on unbiased logic as to what is the best for the child.

If the diet isn't balanced, then yes it is. If it is balanced, then no it isn't. Whether animal, mineral or vegetable is involved is irrelevant.

Sheep and horses are better than cows. With the exception of very heavy loads, where you might use oxen. But of course nowadays, except possibly in Canton Congo, farmers tend to use tractors.
