Russia better deal with its racism issue before then. And I am not referring to the knobs in the stands.

If you can't wander the streets back to the hotel late at night tipsy, it's not worth going.

Same applies for Ukraine in 2012, but Euros are mostly a white affair anyways, and most people will head to Poland regardless.

Russia & Ukraine are among the worst when it comes to tourists scams....the most dangerous people are the police (milicia)

I'm glad they were reasonable about it and won't hold any matches further east than Yekaterinburg. That way it's at least manageable. Though lucky for you, Yekaterinburg is a stone's throw away from Novosibirsk..... only 1000 miles!
Pfft. It only matters when it comes to final matches not group matches which are all held in the same city usually. 1000kms is bugger all where im from. Australian footballers do 4 hrs on a plane every 2 weeks. And surely these soccer players can get their nails or hair done while they're up in the air

You won't be tipsy in Qatar, no alcohol and also better not be a homosexual Football fan.

I think you will find it is the fans that will be complaining about having to travel 1000km.

7 hours later and having watched Jack Warner (FIFA delegate) calling an elderly BBC journalist "a piece of s**t" on Panorama for asking him about the tickets he sold on the black market, I think David Mellor is correct, I paraphrase:

"Any other organisation would investigate such (bribery) claims seriously...isn't it time that Governments investigate FIFA?"

I told a bloke at work earlier "that Blatter has got to be the most dodgy Swiss I've ever seen". He laughed knowingly.

Right now, I have a feeling Russia will get 2018 and Qatar 2022.
Only 65 hours to wait...
I told you.
I can't believe it.

We just got back from Oerlikon - met the Sky TV man and had a chat with Pedro Pinto from CNN. Sorry, I can't tell you what Pedro said about the result.

I can't believe it.

Russia - maybe
Qatar - WTF?
Have you been to the Middle East in Summer?

Me again.
Spot on mate.

I've watched Man United in the East - Slovakia and Russia, albeit some years ago, and it's primitive the monkey chants at Andy Cole and other black players.
Primitive.

Err... actually you can drink, the other is ok as long as you keep it in doors. But I still think that YOU should come to enjoy the 50 degree heat of a Qatar summer.

Perhaps it'll be indoors, in the AC?

Thanks for this. The Russian win says a lot about FIFA.

Apparently the stadia will be cooled -- somehow. And then dismantled and shipped off to Afghanistan or somesuch, after the Germans have won.

Re: FIFA World Cup 2018 Announcement

What's the top news item on FIFA's website right now, the day the hosts of the 2018 and 2022 WCs were announced?

Tshosane's Zebras hit new heights

The Zebras of Botswana are riding a herd of good results in 2012 CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifying, and they have surged up the last FIFA/Coca-Cola Rankings to a best-ever spot of 67th.

'Cos if they bury those ridiculous decisions deep enough, nobody will notice ... right?

Re: FIFA World Cup 2018 Announcement

I'm not going to gripe much because for starters, I'm not much of a soccer fan, and secondly, I know more people here were bitterly disappointed that England did not get the 2018 World Cup. However, I think selecting Qatar as host of the 2022 tournament was a mistake. Hope I'm wrong.

Re: FIFA World Cup 2018 Announcement

I feel badly that England lost the World Cup because I do have friends in that country who are mad about football (your football, not mine) and would love to see the World Cup in their back yard. That being said, I think Russia can host a pretty good World Cup and the same problems that make me suspect FIFA made a mistake selecting Qatar do not apply to Russia.

Re: FIFA World Cup 2018 Announcement

From today's Telegraph:

Speaking at a dinner on Thursday night he (Cameron) also revealed the lengths that Prince William had gone to to convince Fifa members to vote for England. “I met Prince William coming out of one of these meetings and said, ‘how did it go?’ He said it had gone really, really well. I said, 'gosh how did you do it, what did you offer him? An invitation to the wedding?' He said, 'Prime Minister, I went so far I think I offered to marry him'.”

Re: FIFA World Cup 2018 Announcement

David Mellor was on Radio 4's Today this morning and he said that it was now time that FIFA followed the IOC in getting rid of corruption.
He went on to say that we ought to roll up our sleeves and take FIFA head on. John Humphries interupted and said, We're just got a call from Downing Street, this discussion is terminated.!"
I think Cameron did a great job with the bid but it was all too late. So now the whole charabanc look like a bunch of morons with only two votes in England's favour.
