Re: Wimbledon 2013

The temptation to go back to Basel and drive around my old neighbourhood honking my horn until 3am is immense.

Bitter about two weeks of no sleep during Euro 2012? Perhaps

A good weekend for British sport: the Lions on Saturday, Murray on Sunday... roll on the Ashes...

Anyone know why Nastase decided to wear that outfit in the Royal box yesterday. How bizarre.

Too much pressure? The new generation coming in force and everyone playing the game of their life against her? (as she put it) I guess it's hard to retire from sport, she's a legend.
I felt sorry for her, whatever has happened. And yes, it was painful to watch.

Hmm, Dimitrov is the new Federer, they say. Not Andy's fault.

Re: Wimbledon 2013

Burn out.

If you'd have grown up in Compton, and worked hard to get out and then had loads of money, living the good life would be a natural conclusion.

It must be really hard to maintain so much hard training and keep motivation over so many years, continually under the spotlight, without it taking it's toll.

I agree with the burn out part, not the Compton part. She needed money to start playing tennis and going to tournaments at least in the beginning (they all do), and guess that was financed by her parents.
No-one reaches that level because they want to get out from somewhere, or because of the money - solely. It's talent and love for that sport.

You're interpretation isn't exactly what I meant - but it is a place (or, at least, used to be) that people with talent and a little money would be happy to move on from, given the chance - not the primary goal, but a by-product, thereof.

Yes, and people with a few more money would be happy to move on to more than a few more money...and so on. I don't see the relevance of this subject when we discuss about this level, regardless. It's like we all went to school because we knew that one day it would be paying off.
People with talent, in sport, want to be the best and keep it that way, that's the motivating factor. In general, people would prefer to do things they are talented at.
See Federer today. What a game against Wawrinka.
