Has Qatar suddenly become hot in summer?

........ or was this known, when FIFA awarded the country the 2022 World Cup.

Now they're trying to back pedal and reschedule for the winter, possibly conflicting with other football competitions or even the Winter Olympics.

What a cock up.

that would be the least of the problems...

of bigger concern to me is the amount of workers treated like slaves with many losing their lives

I'm sure footballers don't ski - too risky.

Re: Has Qatar suddenly become hot in summer?

Yep, a bad decision all round and a sad case of FIFA trying to be fair and PC, when awarding the competition.

Ultimately, they should choose the more traditional and wealthy nations to play host - Brazil are not without problems, either.

Well, Qatar is the wealthiest nation on earth. But, s far as their treatment of migrant workers go; that is just horrible and sickening. But very common in all Arab oil rich nations. They just think that they are above the law.

True.. I read a statistic approx 2-4 nepali workers come back to Nepal Dead (Daily) due to modern day slavery issues.

Sad indeed, most of the laborers in this region is from India as it stands. I met young guys who just left their village when flying back from Chennai to Abu Dabi.

Makes me feel super lucky and blessed to be in my position, its sad to leave your family for years to do hard labor for only pennies a day (from what it seems like).

Complain no more, but i hope the best works out for those being mistreated.

Well they are, they also hire the world's largest military to execute their financial agendas (using US to influence the take down of Syria).

But no one questions this huh? We slam every arab nation except for Qatar and Saudi... Why doesnt anyone make this connection? Oh yeah, oil lines and locked in contracts using USD blocks their view.

It's slave labour. The Nepalese in Qatar (and the Pakistanis in Dubai) are conned into going to those countries to work with a pay level and accommodation of a standard that never materialises. And, quite often, they have their passports taken away so they can't leave.

Misha Glenny covers it quite well in his book, McMafia.

I suffered enough from the Summer sun in Europe. How does one
deal with Qatar's 50 °C weather?

What about LGBT visitors to the olympics? One gets years in prison, and 90 lashes for this in Qatar. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/9284186.stm

Cynic.

Incidentally, have you heard that Qatar are favorites to host the Winter Olympics in Summer 2022?

I agree that holding the WC in Qatar is a travesty but why do people forget the travesty of holding it in Russia where racism and homophobia is endemic AT football games.

FIFA is a joke (charity status hahahaha!).

The difference is that the Qatar climate problem is a sports problem.

That neither the IOC or FIFA give a errr hoot about politics/legal issues is no surprise, but that they do not even have the professional standards to choose a place where their sport can be played is another.

The management of both is totally corrupt, IMHO.

Everything finally comes down to money profit.
Can the construction in Qatar not take place by paying those poor men decent wages ? Yes they can. But the profit margins would be lesser.
All this money that Qatar and most of Arab world makes is invested in the developed American and European banks. unfortunately the banks there are not willing to ask/ turn a blind eye to the origins of this money.
They too want to make profit.

Re: Has Qatar suddenly become hot in summer?

Well, we all know how FIFA make their decisions

In a fair, rational process based on what's the best place for the sport and the fans and with no consideration for pecuniary matters at all

After all money can't buy everything.

Obviously.

How can it be political correct to award a global competition to a repressive state that effectively depends upon slavery to function? BTW should we boycott Harrods?
