Drone narrowly misses killing skier during competition

http://www.eurosport.com/alpine-skii...01/story.shtml

Mr. Hischer was bloody lucky he wasn't killed. Only missed him by centimetres.

Re: Drone narrowly misses killing skier during competition

Another bit of sensationalistic journalism.

When I read this earlier this morning, it stated that it landed close behind him and if any pieces broke off and hit him, he didn't seem to notice.

I'm not saying it's wasn't a dangerous situation, but to state that it nearly killed him, is a bit of an unqualified statement IMO.

I was nearly killed once when a big branch fell off a tree in a gale - but I had already walked past.

Re: Drone narrowly misses killing skier during competition

No, he probably didn't notice at the time, but if he'd been a few tenths of a second slower it would have hit him. And it shouldn't have even been there. It was not supposed to be over the racing area at all.

"The use of drones at great events in Austria and Switzerland is forbidden. But it is allowed in Italy," he said.

"That's why we agreed with [broadcasters] Infront that drones are not to fly above the raceway, but only above a corridor besides the spectators. I am sorry."

The rumor is that Ligety was at the controls.

Re: Drone narrowly misses killing skier during competition

Must say I am somewhat concerned by the huge proliferation of drones- getting worse daily- and with 1000s sold for Christmas presents. Privacy, safety, and also the possible use for terrorist attacks (anthrax?).

And also causing huge damage to wildlife. At the Creux-du-Van near me, one the best nature reserves in Switzerland- no climbing is allowed as there are several very sensitive species nesting and breeding, peregrines, Ticholdrome wallcreepers (very rare and a beautiful shade of grey and fuchsia pink), Ibex, red kites, skylarks, etc- and yet I witnessed several idiots with drones filiming and hugging the nesting sites this Summer, with drones.

As we live near the border we also have constant intrusion of the custom's drones flying over our mountains and fields. Bah humbug.

They're handy for looking at the guttering, though, so there's that.
