Roger is just great.

I hate when W. tennis ends, always feel sad. I loves it

Re: Wimbledon 2017

Maestro Roger is undisputed King, the final was not the slug match hoped for due to the unfortunate injury to Cilic, however, whichever way you cut it, whether you appreciate him or not, if you follow tennis then you know how privileged we are to be able to watch this athlete's mastery of this sport.

Now on for a Swiss double (and a Scottish win!) with Martina Hingis and Jamie Murray in the mixed doubles final!

PS, it's about time the Duke of Kent stepped aside and let the beautiful Kate Duchess of Cambridge do the honours!

Why? She probably doesn't want to. He's still the president.

Quatsch. Yes. Berdych is still the king of kings (well, at least for us )

Thanks, Rachel, for spelling his name correctly.

Re: Wimbledon 2017

Getting back to the OP: Wimbledon has been weird this year. I haven't watched a tennis match since I was a kid. I haven't shown any interest in tennis for decades now. Everyone who has visited us at home knows that our telly is away in a room where nobody ever actually watches it.

Yet I've had several people send me text messages to announce that Roger Federer won one of the matches. Or, at least, I think that's what "Go Roger!" means.

I have no idea why anybody who knows me thinks I'd be remotely interested in what Roger Federer is up to. Is it because I live in Switzerland? Perhaps they think I know him?

I dunno. I thought I'd be able to escape the silly tournament just by, you know, not actually watching it. It seems, apparently, that I can't.

OP: I take your point.

Exactly why, they probably think that having lived here for so long (however long that may be) that you have embraced Swiss culture, and so like the Swiss, support him and were excited about his record prospects. Obviously not. Do you follow any "Swiss" sport btw?, such as curling, skiing, ice hockey...Sauber F1 team...Swiss wrestling?

I don't follow any sport, Swiss or otherwise.

Which makes the text messages even more bewildering.

Re: Wimbledon 2017

Congratulations to Roger Federer, the best tennis player of his generation, and probably the greatest tennis player of all time. I think it's a damn shame that most of my fellow Americans don't know who he is because (a) he isn't American (even though he speaks fluent English) and (b) he isn't an @$$hole. Recently, there was discussion on a sports radio station about the greatest athletes currently playing. One of the first people mentioned was Serena Williams, but nobody said anything about Federer.

Americans who are looking for the next Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, or Andre Agassi (but not Arthur Ashe or Pete Sampras) will not miss Roger Federer when he leaves the sport. Tennis fans will.
