Sweden gone! What the hell is going on in this tournament
What is usually happening in sport (and not only): if you play well and give everything in a match, chances are you win. And that is not reserved only to a few "chosen" ones.

Me likes it.

I usually support the underdogs, in case it wasn't clear...

Well done, Ukraine.

He basically said England were poor and it'd be an easy win for Germany.
It can never be said that our German friends lack ‘self confidence’ though to be fair they are a bit quieter than usual in the office this morning.

Holland look refreshing today, a bit chaotic maybe. England were pretty disappointing. Switzerland as well. Belgium solid against a really bad Russian team.
Refreshing indeed.

I don't want to see Seferovic start for Le Nati, ever again. Serial bottler

Embolo though, wow - hope he stays injury free
I think you changed your mind on that recently?

Looking forward to Portugal - Germany on Saturday. I think the winner from that match may go on to win it.
Win what exactly? A flight home?

I enjoyed the chess match of England/Germany followed by the most chaotic and entertaining match since, well, Monday

At this moment, just 29 out of 61 poll voters got it wrong. A representative statistics of facts on the internet .

Watched the England match last night, surrounded by male England fans constantly shouting random stuff like "**** YOU ****ING KRAUTS" at the screen, yelling "**** OFF BACK TO BED YOU ****" to the crying German child". Just in general behaving like the most obnoxious and vulgar louts and most undignified and unsportsmanlike football fans in Europe. It was truly cringeworthy to listen to.
As an Englishman, did you step in and ask them to tone it down a bit or did you just let them carry on as is the norm here?

Yes Tom, obviously I went and asked a group of 30+ drunk football fans surrounding me to "tone it down". Because that is what smart people do, right?

I assume this was in Switzerland?

If so, can I also assume that these people were intelligent bankers, pharma workers and so on rather than some thugs on day-release out of prison?

I wonder how many Germans were also watching and having to put up with that abuse?

And yes, I've got punched and kicked here for doing the right thing. It's amazing how tough people are when there's lots of them together.

I guess it's probably better for you to have done nothing.

Tom, you really do epitomise the average boomer-style posts; the stuff you come out with is often completely and laughably ludicrous. I mean seriously, advocating someone getting "punched and kicked" simply because people around them are being foul-mouthed and vulgar at a football game? I may find it obnoxious, but that is my own view and why would I ever put myself or my friends at risk for something like that? No-one was being hurt or in need of protection.

Clearly you have absolutely no sense of perspective and are just engaging in some frankly daft and exaggerated moral posturing.

Why would you, in this case, got punched and kicked - surely we're talking, as I wrote, bankers and scientists if it was in Switzerland?

It's not impossible that some of them frequent this forum. Who knows?

Maybe they'll respond here and justify their behaviour?

I guess, under the circumstances, you did what you felt was right and I'm not knocking you for that.
I guess I don't frequent those types of places and when I have watched international football abroad, it's always been pretty civilised.

I try not to do moral posturing.

I'm the world's biggest coward but I still sometimes manage to find that tiny bit of self-worth from somewhere and step in and do something - rather than only moan about it on social media the next day.

But, as I said, I wasn't with Chuff watching football so I can't say whether I would have done anything. Probably not if they were as fierce a bunch of bankers and scientists as is possible in Switzerland.

I've seen some bankers do serious damage to people, some of it ruining peoples lives. None of it physical of course.

Re: Euro 2020

Last American Football match I attended was probably in '06 and I couldn't quite enjoy a moment of it because of the rabid nature of fans in the stadium. I thought how could anyone want to sit here as a form of entertainment much less come with families, you felt like you were on the frontlines of a battlefield. People really can be animals

I then fast forward to matches at Camp Nou where it is quite literally a family atmosphere or going to St. Jakob Park to watch La Nati and it is night & day.

Some bizarre things go on in sport among fans but I steer clear of these venues, there's no fun in that for me much less family

Re: Euro 2020

I don’t understand why … if one is not kin on spending time with bunch of loud fans who swear the opponents team and get vulgar in front of children … would attend such event in the first place, instead of enjoying coziness and comfort of own place with TV and bunch of likeminded individuals.

Perhaps self-inflicted pain or asking for trouble?

Re: Euro 2020

Attendance at a sporting event live is nothing like being on your couch. I've seen la Suisse win in the final moments in St. Jakob Park & Geneva, Messi score outrageous goals at Camp Nou and suffice it to say the energy is intoxicating

In the end, even more so now during the COVID era you can see that we are social creatures and the difference attendance in the stadiums likely had on both la Nati or Spain vs Croatia cannot be diminished. It pushed the players/teams and collective joy even among strangers is lovely

You must be a great football fan then. I watch it merely not to miss out, just in case when caught up in a conversation next day, I can follow it when everyone else is talking about it

I can understand that. Watching live is a totally different experience from watching it on TV.

Watching it in a pub or whatever with a load of obnoxious fans is different kettle of fish entirely. I’d rather watch at home with a group of friends than do that.

This just sound like regular terrace banter and I'm sure there were similar scenes in German bars. I'd be far more ashamed and inclined to have a word if they started making monkey gestures towards opposing black players.
