Murray beats Nadal to reach US open final

Murray trumps Nadal to reach US Open final

• Nadal outdone in power, strategy and fitness
• First Brit in grand slam final since Rusedski in 1997

Andy Murray has reached the final of the US Open with a thrilling 6-2, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 win over world number one Rafael Nadal. Murray outmatched Nadal from the baseline and with a series of magnificent backhands to stun the reigning Wimbledon and French Open champion and set up a final clash with Roger Federer, who has not lost at Flushing Meadows since 2003.

Rudeski does not really count as he is Canadian born.

But awesome work by Murray to come back out there after the delay and still win as Nadal was a lot more on his game than the day before.

Congratulations on a star performance by Murray but why, oh why, does he have to come across as such a git during the press conf. afterwards??

Grunting and mumbling his way past his chewing gum. Nadal wins on personality.

Still, at least he wasn't chomping his way through a plate of sushi this time.

Re: Murray beats Nadal to reach US open final

I do not think that I have ever seen Nadal look so exhausted as when Murray had him running back & forth in one of the games in the last set.

Nadal was a very gracious loser.
Murray's game has improved so much and I really think he has a really good chance against Federer - as has been said - he is a misery and I think always looks scruffy.

Re: Murray beats Nadal to reach US open final

great match, Murray was outstanding - if he plays like that again today he can easily beat Federer, he has beaten him twice in 3 meetings so he has a good chance

Agree about his personality

Re: Murray beats Nadal to reach US open final

I disagree. Wasn't McEnroe a bit like that - the brat? Murray is old style - cocky, rebellious, and great at what he does. And now he has a great chance of winning the US open.
In case you were not aware - and this has nothing to do with personality - Murray attended Dublane Primary School (in Scotland) where Thomas Hamilton walked into the school and went on a killing spree, shooting kids on sight (the Dunblane Massacre). Murray hid under the headteacher's desk. We could quite easily not be reading about a young Scot beating Nadal...

I must say I like Murray's style. I can see it won't appeal to everyone, but he's got a bit of grit and I like his "in it to win it" attitude. Good luck to the fellow. First Scot in a tennis men's singles grand slam - ever. Gret stuff.

Re: Murray beats Nadal to reach US open final

Last night we saw something from a British tennis player that hasn't been seen for decades. We saw skill but we also saw a never say die attitude. For so many years British tennis players and other sport personalities have given up when things started to go against them. Murray not only didn't give up but he matched and in the end outplayed Nadal. Well done Andy and best of luck for tonight

Re: Murray beats Nadal to reach US open final

He took retaliation for lost match at Wimbledon. Amazingly Nadal's topspin and power didn't work miracle in the same way as hard-hit flat ball from Murray's forehand and backhand. It is more evident on the concrete surface than on the grass. Nadal's tactics works better on slower surfaces as sand (clay) court.

Today Federer will show that his place in tennis chronicles is still there. Surely he will find it so much easier to play versus Murray that if he would have had to challenge Nadal

Superb Federer ends Murray dream. Brutal score apart from the second set: 6-2 7-5 6-2. Has the Fed found his old form, or is this a one off

Re: Murray beats Nadal to reach US open final

Justice? In that Murray had done something wrong, or Federer had been in some way wronged previously?

Federer was sublime.

I have to admit, as a Scot rooting for Andy, that he really got on my nerves at the trophy ceremony. I paraphrase: Roger is the best player ever to play tennis, but I beat him twice before.

I.e. He may be the best, but I beat the best twice. Reminds me of primary school - the guy needs a bit of grace and humility

<Groan> I'm tired of these almost good enough performances from our players and teams. I say we go American on their A***. If you're not a winner you're a LOSER, there is no such thing as a good second place.

I suggest that when Murray arrives back in the UK, nobody talks to him

Re: Murray beats Nadal to reach US open final

I am so glad that Roger got back on his feet. That Mononucleosis is a bad and strong infection that can linger many months. It is unbelievable he could do all that he's done this year after that. ( Aussie SF, Wimby and FO finals ), a real pity that it spoiled what could have been his best season and turned into an struggle.

He looks good again, and as this poster shows, he brings the spirits of the greats on his racket.

I am all in favour of a spiced-up game of tennis where players can hurl fireballs at their opponents.

You seem to be mixing up Michael Chang and Liu Kang...
