So you rate Switzerland's chances whatever?

Let's say they beat Honduras 1-0

If Chile wins, Switzerland will go through.

If Spain wins, though, it will come down to goal difference and Switzerland are already behind Chile and Spain in this regard . . . hence my original comment about Switzerland really having to score some goals.

Ah, forget about Switzerland.
They won't have the nerves of steel and brutal determination which is needed to see it through to the victorious end.

Sad but true. Sigh.

I am extremely upset byt the fact that I won't be able to see Cannavaro on TV without my husband looking funny at me

Re: 2010 World Cup actual match discussion here (all matches)

I'm very happy Italy are out. They were the one team that I didn't want to win this year. I think they are sly and they have such cheating tactics sometimes, and to be fair, what goes around comes around. That's my opinion of this particular line-up. I will not judge the new team they come up with until I've seen how they play, I may well end up rooting for them in the next world cup or euro tournament, but I dislike this group of players very much.

Cannavaro has ended his international career in a shocking way. He will spend his last few years for a team in Dubai I heard.

Well, look at Zidane's last international game, at least he ended it in the final and not at the bottom of a group that consisted of New Zealand, Paraguay and Slovakia.

Funny how life works out isn't it Zidane must have been laughing at that result.

Having said that, New Zealand and Slovakia played very bravely and both were better than Italy. Better Italy were out now rather than face future embarrassment in the tournament.

I don't care who wins now, just very thankful it won't be the Azzurri. Consider me to be very happy today. ( I thought I'd state it in black and white for all the thicko's out there hehe )

Are you French? Zidane had his last world cup thrown out of a game for reacting in the worst way to what (believe me) is normal jargon when playing soccer.
Did Italy deserve to go? Probably, their game was awful...still will miss the cuties

New Zealand New Zealand.

Aww.... so sad. But the team has been the best *ever* in New Zealand history so much reward to the team!

And to the New Zealand goalie, Mark Paston, I expect he will be receiving some *very* fat offers from clubs around the world.

Well, if Spain beats Chile then Chile's goal difference will go down. Though Switzerland need to make up 2 goals on Chile, so either they need to hammer Honduras or they need Spain to hammer Chile.
Either way, I hope Spain qualify, any of the other will do. Though if Switzerland top the group, they are surely in for a pasting at the hands of Brazil!

Re: 2010 World Cup actual match discussion here (all matches)

I'm hoping the U.S. beats Ghana on Saturday, but I'm smart enough to know it would NOT be a shocking upset if Ghana were to win. Still, if the U.S. did win, we Americans can say our team was one of the best 8 teams in the world in 2010, that's not pretty bad at all.

Interestingly, I have to work on Saturday and my supervisor is from Ghana. I'll have to remember not to be too happy if the U.S. wins...

You are of course right about the "self proclaimed"... but there is an easy and objective way called "statistic" to settle this one:
Top four positions in previous world cups:

England
1st: 1 (1966*)
2nd: —
3rd: —
4th: 1 (1990)

United States
1st: —
2nd: —
3rd: 1 (1930)
4th: —
What is the difference between England and the United States in World Cup play?

The top statistic drives English (and a good chunk of British fans in the rest of the UK that roots for England) fans nuts, and they tear their hair out wondering when or if England will ever win another World Cup.

Most Americans have no idea that the U.S. finished as well as they did in 1930, and sports fans are more upset over their local (NFL, NCAA) football or baseball team's championship drought than anything the U.S. does in international (association) football competition.

1930? Easy: No qualifiers and no England, Germany, Italy, Spain...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1930_FIFA_World_Cup

"The first World Cup was the only one without qualification. Every country affiliated with FIFA was invited to compete, and given a deadline of 28 February 1930 to accept. Plenty of interest was shown by nations in the Americas; Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and the United States all entered. However, due to the long and costly trip across the Atlantic Ocean, and the length of absence required for players,[1] very few European teams were inclined to take part. Some refused to countenance travel to South America in any circumstances,[9] and no European entries were received before the February deadline. In an attempt to gain some European participation, the Uruguayan Football Association sent a letter of invitation to The Football Association, even though the Home Nations were not members of FIFA at the time. This was rejected by the FA Committee on 18 November 1929.[10] Two months before the start of the tournament, no team from Europe had officially entered.[11]

FIFA president Rimet intervened, and eventually four European teams made the trip by sea: Belgium, France, Romania, and Yugoslavia."

Re: 2010 World Cup actual match discussion here (all matches)

If the USA were in the european qualification groups they would hardly ever have qualified (except maybe in the last two competitions).
Being in Concacaf they really have it easy.

...But it is true that they are getting better. However what really counts is to win the competition and I don't see that happening any time soon.

I thought that 1930 was the infamous "Mussolini WC" in Italy (where Italy became surprisingly world champion, all film material of the finals disappeared and the refs drove home in new Fiats...), so yes: I did look it up. And I was wrong.
