Ads in Signatures

I think I saw a thread here long ago about what can and can't be done in terms of advertising in one's signature, but can find nothing of the sort with the search functionality here, or from the outside with Google. Does such a posting exist? If not, what are the rules?

We no longer police signatures (unless found to contain unacceptable content) since the default setting for them is now set to hide. If members choose they are free to view them by changing the setting.
