| | avatar dimension restrictions
I've got one of the biggest avatars, so it is a bit hypocritical, but maybe the should be restricted in size a bit...like may 100pix height and no more than …oooo…say 200 wide. The tall avatars really stretch out the pages with lots of dead space.
(I’ll change mine first thing when getting home to something smaller.)

At the moment avatars are set like this:
120x120 - new users
200x200 - users who have been here for more than 7 days and posted 5 or more messages (the same trigger which allows posts in the commercial section).
There are a few other smaller priviledges that are revoked for the first group like invisible mode, edit posts, delete posts etc.
Is this to your liking or did you have something else in mind?

Honestly, the avatar has been something that has been bugging me for a while.

I originally allowed bigger avatars because I was trying encourage people to use their own avatars, rather than selecting something lame and pathetic from the gallery I provided. I figured that by making it less restrictive it might encourage some more interesting avatars.
But you are right, now that everyone has cottoned onto the idea it might be an idea to restrict the height. Currently it is 200px - what do you think a sensible height should be?

Judging by your new avatar I think you need to find a new dentist...

120 x 120 is quite generous enough. After that the avatar becomes more like a background.. |

We can 'aford' the width as it would not force content down or away...it is free. And hence will allow more creativity without being overly distracting or imparing usability like excessive heights do.

ok, avatar limits now 200 wide, 120 high, 65KB max. Profile pictures may be 120x120 65KB max. Users with more than 5 posts and 7 days on the system may use animated avatars (if tasteful and not annoying)
