Multiple 'packets' for present Stickies

I must personally take part of the blame for this, but some Forums are getting overloaded with Stickies. It is very useful to have basic information visible at the top of the Forum, but when the whole of the EF screen is filled by them so that one has to scroll down to see the new posts, it is defeating its own object. Added to this, on the whole, Newbies who should read some of the Stickies simply don't, or alternatively, they lengthen them unnecessarily with information which is already there or questions about same.

I'm planning to do a bit of a move around to see if I can improve things.
Thus:
In Activites/Sports there are nine stickies.
Instead of separate Stickies for swimming, tennis and hiking, I want to make one, clearly label it and put the three Threads inside it.
Winter Sports can go into one (and perhaps a Thread with details of Ice Rinks could be added to the 2 skiing threads. A third sticky would contain the three cycling threads and the MTB one. This would also enable the cyclists or winter sports enthusiasts to add other links if they wanted to without cluttering up the 'Sub-Forum front page'.

I appreciate that the present Stickies will then not be visible, it will take an extra click to get to them, but I'd like to have a go and see how it pans out. I shall Tag the 'old' Stickies with 'Sticky Thread' so that if it all goes pear-shaped I can put it back the way it is now.

As they are 'collections' they will have to be closed to stop people adding posts to the multipack. The Threads themselves will remain as they are now.

Please don't shout at me until we have see how it works out.

Re: Multiple 'packets' for present Stickies

This is the system they use on a few other forums I visit, and it works really well. You simply have a master 'sticky' inside of which you can have links to other stickies. Also works well for a FAQ-type thread, where the first post includes the questions and links, jumping to other posts further down the thread.

Of course, it needs to be locked, so only Mods can add new posts or links, but otherwise it works fine.

For two different approaches (one with links, one with FAQs embedded), see these two examples:

Re: Multiple 'packets' for present Stickies

Thanks a lot for the feed-back VI. Also thanks for reminding me to lock them. Lock this, unstick that, stick this, put tags on, close, my head is going round in circles.
As no-one seemed to be shouting very loudly, I've done the Forum Support one in the same way. Unless I hear too many complaints I'll gradually work my way through the rest of the Forums, looking to see where it is an improvement.

I normally browse via the Today's posts' link so I don't normally notice the Stickies. I happened to look at the Forum Support main page the other day and was rather surprised that the rather active thread was so far down the list due to the number of Stickies.

So I fully support the optimization. Thank you.

Re: Multiple 'packets' for present Stickies

Now I've had another go at sorting this stuff and have done the Family Matters and the Other / General. One great advantage of having a single Sticky is that I've been able to put in links to a Thread which is in another Forum. Resources for folk in CH can be found in the Sticky in Other/General where it lives, but also in Daily Life where folk might also look for similar information.

I have, at long last, made a Basic Thread on the subject of Rubbish. The number of Threads on the theme wandering round the forum with 'relevant' info such as what a person living on the right-hand side of the last road in Little-Oozing-in the Mud should do with her Christmas Tree (height 1m 65 cms) is unbelievable.

Have fun and please inform me of errors or anything else that needs adding. The French version is 'ordered'. Anyone keen to take on the Italian or Romansch version? A few of the words used would be a help.

PS I know that some links on the new Thread are still missing, but I have to eat sometime too. I'll the rest as soon as I can.

Re: Multiple 'packets' for present Stickies

I've had a look at Introductions now and put in a Multi-sticky with several links which should be useful to newcomers - the sort of things which are asked again and again in the 28 pages!!! of Forum Support. Most Newbies just don't know where to look - and judging by the time I spent searching for the stuff, neither did I

If anyone has any other bright ideas about stuff which would be useful in there or finds links which don't work, please let me know.
