Online gambling section on the EF front page

Ok, I have been away for some days. Looks like I missed some people misplacing Switzerland's capital and the EF got some paid ads in a questionable format as it comes accross as recommended by the EF rather than a paid ad. From that thread I took MNs quote:

Quote:
View Post
So if anyone wants to rant/complain/question/flounce, all I ask is that you please do it here on the Forum Support thread, and I'll respond as best I can. The basic decision to have these ads isn't up for negotiation, unfortunately (like I said - orders from management) but if I can clarify anything else surrounding it I'm happy to do so.
And yes, I have something to rant: Besides that the start page is a terrible design and we still do not get the features back we had before and gave as feedback, I recognized a fairly prominent box on online gambling. Must be new. It is full of links to "news" on gambling - all articles are spiked with links to the same pages on online casinos.

I do not question that EF needs advertisement. I actually want it to be financially successful as this would mean that we would get less downtime and probably better support than now. (and maybe even a smarter design...) I personally find the driving school ad a very good way forward - although it might need some changes in the format to make clear that it is a paid sticky... but seriously: Gambling? That's really low... what's next, porn? financial advice?

I agree - that was a bit OTT. Even prostitution would be better - they are at least honest when it comes to the costs involved and can explain the services they offer.

Just look for any thread where Nil, LiB, Porsch or Grynch are and it soon turns to smut

On a serious note, I agree that this is pretty cr*p to have online gambling advertised on here. Surely the adverts should remain something to do with Switzerland? We soon jump on Newbies that have no connection to CH.......

More relevant than online gambling? According to the website linked in the box:
Quote:
Online Gambling in Switzerland
Online gambling in Switzerland is not as fortunate. It is currently prohibited by the Swiss government
Next to it is a list of links to online casinos.

I am no lawyer, but I'd say it is probably not only ethically pretty questionable to earn money on advertising services that are illegal here.

Too busy with other things... Like learning geographic and enjoying nasty comments / trolling on the forum.

We keep hearing this is a family forum, gambling most have certainly something to do with it.

It is so refressing to have 1/2 of the home page tied up in ads...
Makes me want to keep clicking on the "Home" button just to make sure I don`t miss one... .

Perhaps Editor Bob or some other representative of The Management might like to take a moment out to comment on this...?

Why am I not surprised to see that this is not happening? We just have some 11 posts in this thread. We did not even deserve an answer when people post a three digit number of negative feedback on the layout changes... so I do not think anyone will step up here. The management is well aware that our attention span is rather short and that they can effectively sit out any issue. There are other websites, but if we would like them more, we wouldn't be here anymore, would we? But if it goes on like the last months even I, and I never flounced before, might simply leave.

I've already forwarded on your concerns about online gambling being illegal here, although I can't verify this info. Is there a link perhaps explaining such?

Jog on then, I can't imagine your constant whining and bitching would be missed.

If you don't like the home page, don't look at it, if you don't like the site don't use it.

Maybe nobody is replying due to the fact that it's a childish tantrum and should be ignored as such. You have nothing better to do than moan? Get a life!!!

Re: Online gambling section on the EF front page

So there we are. It's not legal, but unenforceable.

"It is currently prohibited by the Swiss government, but at the same time, there is no legislation in place to enforce the prohibition, so it happens anyway. Millions of euros are spent on internet gambling every year in Switzerland. The government does not seem concerned, and there is nothing in the books to change the ban in either direction."

You want the law, you get the law

http://www.admin.ch/ch/d/sr/935_521/index.html

it is a terribly long one though. In short: Casinos are legal, but you need a license. There are tough controls on anything from money laundring to the prevention of compulsive gambling. Oh, and you need to pay a lot of taxes if you run a casino. So foreign online casinos are in many way breaking the law posted above...

Yes, it is pretty hard to enforce it, but the same is true for many other crimes I would still not support.

You are welcome to put me on your ignore list. I do not want to annoy anyone, so I would appreciate if you do so. You will find it on the right hand side of your "control panel".

I don't know you, so I could not care less about your opinion. I know plenty of the other members here in person and quite some care about this site and find some of the latest developments not exactly good. This is more than a discussion board, a real life community. If you didn't get that involved here, fine. But calling things childish you aparently don't understand is a bit ignorant...

Re: Online gambling section on the EF front page

It only could justify existence of those adds and gambling links (never mind legal implications) if they were only sole source of financing the EF, in which case the future of this forum would hang on. Not sure this is case here though.
We need to get the answer and sooner the better

Correct. Just because a law is not enforced, or is difficult to enforce, doesn't make it acceptable.

At the end of the day, EF appears to be endorsing or promoting illegal activity. That cannot be right.
