Single Issue Posters

You know the ones... they roll into the forum, having googled "libertarian paradise switzerland" or "minaret ban" or "useless bomb detectors", they have no genuine interest in Switzerland whatsoever, have no real intention of joining the English Forum community, and are little more than a pain in the backside, posting incessantly on their pet subject while never once advising us where we can find dishwasher tablets or brown sugar.

We've always had them, although they seem to have increased in number lately (coinciding with the decision to make "international affairs and politics" visible to google?).

So what can be done with them? Merciless mocking? Invitations to sling their hooks? A friendly word from a moderator?

All suggestions welcome.

Too tired to attempt a sensible(ish) response right now and don't want to be possibly labelled as tonight's (okay, this early AM's) drunk poster if I do.

Re: Single Issue Posters

Being part of community means different thing to different people so how about going with the flow and allowing everyone to have a say? Have proper debate instead of bringing out the mod guns?

I would take a single issue poster over someone who posts constant nonsense like "what do you wax"

Re: Single Issue Posters

Suffer them silently. It gives us a warm feeling, sort of superior qualities expected but not espoused.

I have just had a nice Fondue with a Swiss diplomat. He spent 4 years in London and had no bad experiences, he loved the place! It just shows that with a little effort and persuasion we CAN convert these peasants to a civilisation they have never seen (Poor sods)

Even more frustrating are the people who start threads and then don't contribute further. This is especially frustrating if they asked a question at the start.

At the very least, I would hope to see an acknowledgement of the input by others.

Is there a thread on Dispatches "Lessons in Hate and Violence" documentary already? You should start one before some single issue poster beats you to it

Or even better:

Invite them to the typical Swiss tradition of making foreigners say:

Chuchikäschtli

Re: Single Issue Posters

back to topic.... (had to react on chuchichaeschtli clip)

i found EF also "by accident", when i was searching on google for english style bacon available in zurich region. and don't know if my first post was very helpful/interesting or just weird.

but i am thankfull to have found such an colourful bouquet of people and threads here on EF who are not only fixed on one issue (that is what keeps me away from nerdy forums). some threads i ignore for pure lack of interest. but those who get my attention don't have fit in a strict grid.

so i would not judge a newbie on his first post. as far he has a spark of decency and not just pops in to make some (hidden) advertising.

Re: Single Issue Posters

Yes, well, I live in the U.S. and don't really like anyone I've ever met anywhere and have a bunch of student loans that I'd rather not pay off. I'd also rather not look for a job right now as that infringes on my overall feeling of freedom and well-being. Whenever I watch FOX News or that Nancy Grace lady I realize what a bunch of dumbf**** I am surrounded by. I can hardly stand it. I'm pretty sure that I can't raise my as-yet-unborn children here as they be totally shallow like those chicks on The Real Housewives of Madison County. My great uncle was Swiss by marriage and so I'm pretty sure I could get a passport, and I will join the army if they let me have a gun at home. Do people over there speak another language? If I talk loudly in English will it help? I think it's pretty much the same as here except I can do whatever I want and earn way more money, and the pictures of mountains look really cool and I will look awesome in all of my pictures that I post on facebook with those mountains in the background. Europeans are just way cooler and dress better and aren't nearly as fat, so I think that's the place for me. I have just enough money for the plane ticket. I'll be fine though, right?

Merciless mocking seems a bit harsh. I opt for gentle piss-taking.

The trouble with gentle piss-taking is that the worst offenders wouldn't notice - and many of them would have difficulty noticing merciless mocking as well!

Absolutely, you will...

You are the first of these style posts to completely understand the challenges, just mild-down that accent, get the passport sorted out (or come over & if the passport isn't going to happen - marry). I'll be the first to buy you a drink.

True - but it isn't for their benefit, it's for the the audience's benefit.

I find that when I make such subtle posts it's more for my own benefit ... so I can say what I mean without the other person realising. When I can insult a German-speaker in German without them realising, then I shall believe that I have attained fluency.

Re: Single Issue Posters

I always hate it when a new poster come on with a big drama in their lives.

We offer them sympathy, a shoulder to outpour their angst, useful advice on where to go etc and then.....nothing!

(maybe I am nosy, sad or whatever - but like a soap opera - I want to know what happened to them)
