Re: Why do topics get moderated on the very subject they are trying to address ?

Ci permit question: can I re-enter Switzerland?

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=leech

2. leech

3. One on who existance depends on the good deeds of others, but never themselves.

4. One who does not support the community.

So I was wrong then?

I have several medals (courtesy of Betty Windsor) they are just bits of tin to me now, you want them?

If it's plain information you want, without strings, perhaps a trip to the library might be in order?

Re: Why do topics get moderated on the very subject they are trying to address ?

I don't agree with bullying. But lets be honest, no one would walk into a room full of strangers, walk up to the first group chatting and without introduction demand an answer to a question that has been discussed ad nauseum by the group previously, listen to the answer, then without thank you or adieu leave! But this is what happens over and over again on the forum. Whilst its easy to point fingers and yell 'bully', it may help to look at things from the point of view of the regulars. Searching is not difficult and we've all made the mistake of posting a question that would have required an easy search, but being politely pointed in the direction of the search button is not offensive and should not be taken as such.

If new members realise that whilst we're on the tinterwebs, this is more than a Q&A about Switzerland at their disposal, its also a social place in addition to a portal for information and treat it as such, then maybe they wont get their heads bitten off by disgruntled longstanding members.

Just my 2 cents.

WAIT A MINUTE!

Either I got it wrong or you got it wrong.

I don't think that the complain is about Moderators being bullies.... Not at all!

I think it is about members being bullies and no one stops them to bully! Like AbFab said in the other thread, it is happening because it has no more boss or chief in here. Not because of the mods, I think it is quite obvious that the mods are not enough in the team to be able to see and handle everything on the forum and they may not know which direction to take anymore.

But to see people being allowed to bully others when it is strictly against the forum rules is the main concern here.
So too many indians and no chief ?

Time for an EF revolution?

Old guards, perhaps it is time to get lost. When you start to complain about something you are doing, it may be time to stop doing it. It's fine time to let some new blood in.

No. I find this persistent whining drivel deeply offensive, given the amount of unpaid effort that has been contributed to this forum over the last six years by the very people who are now being denounced as 'bullies', not to mention the moderators who have to put up with reading this constant whinging about their work.
That does not give them or you the right to choose what users converse about, so long as the threads do not violate the conditions or the spirit of the forum. In fact, the opinions posted were actually for the benefit of the forum.

If you don't like what users are saying, the only choice you really have in this matter is to bow out of the conversation.

DB, no one is disputing the amount of time and work people have put in over the years. HOwever, it is possible to do that, without also having the snide, sarcastic comments at the same time. I can fully understand why some folk have left in disgust, and at times I have hoped that non of my Swiss colleagues drop in and see the number of racist comments that crop up from time to time.

Personally, I tend to compare this site with two others that I have belonged to for years, the better known one being the Lonely Planet Thorn tree. Despite regular repeat questions, I have never seen the amount of derogatory comments that I see on this forum. Why is it perculiar to this forum? I do think it is okay for people to look to themselves and query their own responses for appropriateness at times.

I do agree with you.

I'm a computer programmer and I spend a lot of time on forums for helping/getting help with coding. Programming forums are notorious for snarkiness and impatience. I'm that way myself sometimes! But those forums are MUCH less unpleasant than this one.

Several of my friends agree that this forum does stand out for the nastiness and pettiness of some of the commenters and moderators. Posts get moved by moderators for ridiculous, petty reasons, there is a sort of "in-crowd" made up of people who exclude everyone else by making incomprehensible inside jokes/comments on posts, there is a lot of meanness. It's a shame.

As a result, I have used this forum much less than I had hoped to at first.

Wait since I have 1/6 or 1/8 (not sure) of native indian blood, does it entitle me to become the chief?

I live above an Indian restaurant..does that count?

On Topic : I'm sure we all got bullied, being a member or newbie here but how far does it have to go before the person bullied gets heared?

What steps can the person that is bullied take if it gets out of hand, and how is this followed up?

You know, no matter how beneath you a question may be, it just doesn't justify rude senseless responses and insults. It only places you even further lower beneath what ever it is that wasn't good enough for you.

Next time, ignore it and move on.

I did read this. Sadly, right now, this isn't applied the way it was made to be.

It got a bit loose on that.

When one user began to make physical threats by PM, I simply reported the offensive messages and the user was permanently banned.

No fuss, no hysterics, no whining. Just a click, followed by swift, decisive and efficient action.

He still hasn't come to find me at any events, either...
