Editing post results in lost 'Thanks'

I edited one of my messages recently, one which had already received several 'Thanks'. After I'd edited it, those 'Thanks' disappeared, although I'm pretty sure they stayed in my 'Thanks' counter.

From what I've seen (on previous posts, not just this one), the 'Thanks' don't ever come back. You don't lose the thanks in your counter, but you don't see them at the bottom of your post anymore.

It's obviously a system glitch (not sure how vBulletin stores its messages, but it may keep each version of an edited post as a separate table entry. If the 'thanks' are associated with the original PostID and not updated to match the edited PostID, it makes sense that they still exist in the system but aren't associated with the post content that's being shown). That's my guess, in any case, of what's happening.

Just wondering if anything can be done to get them back?

Yep, it's a bug. I find that "thanks" do come back after reloading the page though. Are you sure yours haven't?

edit: for edit's sake

Dunno. I just thanked your previous post. Have a little edit and see whether 1) you lose the points and 2) my thanks come back?

Re: Editing post results in lost 'Thanks'

Actually that should be the expected behaviour.

If you edit a post the thanks should disappear (from your count as well).

Why? Well by editing one word I could present the opposite meaning of my op and then people would have thanked against their intention.

Before.

I love Switzerland

edit

I hate Switzerland

Re: Editing post results in lost 'Thanks'

Yes, but making an edit like that is much less likely than someone making an edit to correct an error or omission.

I'm mostly thinking about editing this post in future: FAQ: A brief guide to salaries in Switzerland

Seems a shame to lose all the 'Thanks' that have been given just to add another question & answer (which is why I've reserved the following two posts to make future changes). But it would be better from a readability-and-organisation point-of-view if I could just do it in the original post without risking losing all my thanks.

Wot she says, bless her

Alternatively, just tell us what system you run, we'll tell you which buttons to press - or, very much easier and faster for all concerned, you just tell us when it happens and one of us will pop round and do it for you if it's all proving too complicated

BTW for security reasons, can you just confirm to me the 3-digit security code on your credit card so I know I'm talking to a Real Village Idiot. (no PM necessary, just post it up here in plain view- it'll be fine, you'll see ...)

All 32 of them are still there, you just need to clear your browser's cache and you'll see them again.

Well, it seems there was a small flaw in my plan. I've just had another look at my thread and realise that I've already lost the ability to edit it.

So much for the plan of updating the thread frequently!

Aside from Mods, does anyone get the ability to edit posts long after they've been posted (eg, after a certain number of posts / longevity of membership / etc)? Or is it always limited to a short window after the post has been made?

Re: Editing post results in lost 'Thanks'

VI, if I were a member with the nasty habit of groaning and giving bad rep you would be in a bad way this morning. If I go and delete all those nice comments I made about your Thread yesterday it will serve you right.

You youngsters seem to think that just because someone is drawing their old age pension they know nothing about the workings of EF.

I am sure we had a little chat about your disappearing thanks yesterday. And I am quite sure that this is what I told you "Check it out, I think they come back later". And did you check it out properly later? No you didn't. And this morning you have the nerve to thank young pretty MathNut for saying exactly what I said.

Re: Editing post results in lost 'Thanks'

I would like to officially thank Longbyt for being the first person to tell me that the 'Thanks' would come back on their own, and apologise for not testing this out myself before asking on forum support.

Forgive me?
