It is also prevalent in our sister site ToytownGermany.com as well as in other expat sites.

I wonder whether I'd get banned for bumping every single salary slash showing off thread started in the past 30 days and how many pages of the forum it would take up. Reckon about three...

Sometimes I suspect ignorance and laziness (I work in IT, doing a standard job in a bank that pays Market rates, is this enough , yeah I did search (feebly) and can't be arsed to Google, but hey there suckers, let me waste your time and not mine, after all, you should know how much I should earn and not me, you should do the diligence and trawl the internet for my specific circumstances not me.) | | | | | Quite aside from the "meh" factor of salary, cost of living and complaint threads and said threads, there is a simple point you do omit.
People like to hear from other real people, whether that be of their experiences or just a "this is the answer you are looking for".
Searching a forum doesn't address that real need for private/personal contact.
Likewise, if you are coming to a completely new environment - and let's be honest, CH is a bit special - sometimes the insecurity or fear factor of getting it wrong is high, especially when some people might be gambling on a move to CH as the next "big step"...
EF is many different things to many people, but funadmentally, it'll and you'll never get away from the ol' salary or cost of living questions.

Etiquette - is there a rule that says you're not allowed to ask for information?
Regarding "feeble" searching, I must say that I'm not a good internet searcher. I'm OK, but I'm always amazed by what my wife and colleagues can find in their searches on-line, after I've "failed".

In some other forums the stickies say: USERNAME, README: salaries in CH.
the main problem with EF is that ,since it's way of navigation does not seem to consist of individual forum browsing but overall thread browsing, nobody sees the stickies

For our next move, we are now doing a lot of research. I look into french, english and spanish websites and forum while hubby is looking into the german ones as well. We are covering 4 languages for the the two of us to find informations about cost of living, taxes, rents, etc.
I am pretty proud of the amount of informations we found out.
But,
Some website gives very differents numbers and it is sometimes very confusing. We do ask to people we know who are there, and yes, we did ask also on a forum about cost of living, etc.
When you find informations on internet, lets say about kindergarten. You get informations like this: Between 300 euro and 1000 euro / month. Ok.... so what is the 300 and what is the 1000? Do you find more 300 of more 1000 ones?
As long as someone does a proper research and comes to ask questions with already having a knowledge on numbers and cost, I don't see a problem to ask it on the forum. Because stats don't tell you how it is right on the spot, at the source. It is just stats and they change fast!

SQL jokes should be reserved to slashdot and other geeky websites where this type of humour does not violate common social norms of appropriate conduct and behaviour.
