Spam or what? Unsolicited PMs (or emails)

So today I was checking through my email's spam folder (I do this occasionally in case anything "legit" accidentally wound up in there) and came across this message:

HELLO MY DEAR.NICE MEETING YOU.
HOW ARE YOU OVER THERE IN YOUR COUNTRY HOPE FINE.GLORY BE TO GOD.
MY NAME IS (deleted).
I SAW YOUR POST WHEN I WAS BROWSING IN (www.englishforum.ch) AND I AM INTERESTED IN MAKING FRIEND WITH YOU.FOR MORE INTRODUCTION PLEASE REPLY ME THROUGH MY EMAIL ADDRESS AND I WILL SEND YOU MY PICTURE FOR YOU TO KNOW WHAT I LOOK LIKE. HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU WITH LOTS OF LOVE.

I'm not really sure what this is. I don't mind if someone wants to contact me or whatever, and I realize that there are people who come across this site who don't speak English as their native language, but this seems so similar to phishing attempts and things like that (from the language of the message; there were no links or anything to click on besides the english forum one).

Anyway, I'm not concerned about getting spammed through here, but I wanted to bring it to the mods/admins/etc attention just in case this IS some sort of scam or spam or something, so that you guys are aware!

Re: Spam or what?

Normally sending unsolicited PMs (or emails of this type) is an offence which gets the poster a ban - but although Mods see a lot, they don't see PMs. So we rely on members to tell us if they get them - and from whom, preferably giving the link to the User Name.

Sometimes when we have banned, we've seen that the poster has actually sent masses of PM's (we don't see to whom, only the number) but no-one had complained.

Just for the record, this is the reason for the Newbies limit for PMs per day. Beam the name in this direction and I'll stop it.

Re: Spam or what? Unsolicited PMs (or emails)

Presumably the email was sent via the "Send a message via Email to ..." function. That reveals to the recipient the sender's email. From that, I presume that mods or admin can find out the member who sent it.

Or does "Send a message via Email to..." not require a login?

I don't think you can 'send' anything until you are logged in. But of course, an email address doesn't actually tell us who the person is anyway - not in every case. Some people use their names, but many have 'fantasy' email addresses which don't help much.

Check your Messaging and Notification settings.
If you click on "Control Panel" - top centre under username - then select "Edit Options", from "Settings and Options" sub menu on l.h.s., you can tick/untick who and how people contact you.
You need to do this - I clicked on your username and it gives me the option of sending you e-mail.

EDIT: on a lighter note - good to see your e-mail clients anti-spam works.

Thanks for the heads up I'll probably keep it that way though, I don't really mind it if someone wants to shoot me a message or an email or what have you. Even if this is a scamming or phishing attempt, it doesn't really bother me or anything, but I figured it would be good to bring it to others' attention on here in case something similar happens to someone else.

I understand that - but at least you can warn/ban the perpetrator!

That's what I said - but we can only do it if the members tell us about it.

...if it helps. That is the kind of introduction a person from the West Country would write to a complete stranger

We are very aware, it's the reason Mods remove email addresses from our member's posts on the forum as they can easily be harvested by spammers.

Re: Spam or what? Unsolicited PMs (or emails)

Thanks special agent vWild1. That saves me looking for the email address which 'the boss' said must be (or must have been at some point), in a post in here.

Can someone put a big red mark on this Thread so that every newcomer who moans about us removing their email address and phone number gets hit in the eye by it.

Glad it's cleared up.

Re: Spam or what? Unsolicited PMs (or emails)

I've just received the following creepy e-mail, scarily not as a PM on here but directly, which means that this person has accessed my e-mail address via the EF and knows my name. As I had the settings on 'registered members' it's someone who's joined EF, but they've not had the decency to contact me through the forum. I've tried to contact the service master but not had a reply. Any ideas about what to do? Apart from upping my security settings, which I've now done.

"My name is Cudier Lemi, I saw your contact today while browsing at englishforum.ch,i will like to know you more and be your friend too, can you write me at (cudierlemi@yandex.com)
we can start from there, also i will send you my picture, i will be waiting because i have something very important to tell you which i may need your assistance please, take care and lots of
love, God bless.
(cudierlemi@yandex.com)
Yours Cudier."

Re: Spam or what? Unsolicited PMs (or emails)

It is likely the person who sent you an email sent it via the PM system, as there is no way for him/her to obtain your email address from EF as a normal user ( unless you had written down your email address in one or more of your posts - EF is heavily indexed by search engines ).

If you can send the complete text of the offending email by way of PM to any serving Mod, I am sure they can then look up at the user profile and determine what course of action to take.

If it was an offending PM that anyone gets, simply use the Report a PM feature ( small red triangle to the right ) and it will be sent to all Mods.

Re: Spam or what? Unsolicited PMs (or emails)

Thanks, I've forwarded it to Nickers (can't resist that name).
I've never, ever put my e-mail address in a post, so the only way they could have found it was from the contact details in my profile. I've changed the setting now, just find this a little upsetting and rather scary.
I know, I'm a whimp.
