EF is specialising in information about Switzerland for English speakers.
Indeed. But people also come here to ask how to find the Favourites bar on their computer screen, what to do about a child's colic and what everyone thinks of whichever muppet is running the United Kingdom this week. That's because the EF is a community, and it's much nicer to ask the opinions of people we know - even if only virtually - than go to some anonymous specialist forum where we are likely to be shot down for asking the same first question as every other newbie who has joined in the last two years.

That doesn't mean, though, that we must have a separate and specialist forum for each of these kind of questions, does it?

EDIT: Bugger. I've just noticed that we do have a forum for each of those questions.

Alright.... you chaps win.

Yes it does.

Is it my imagination, or are those magic mushrooms at the bottom of the page?

If that were the answer, then all the posts not relating to Switzerland in Travel/Day Trips should be deleted all together.
How much dedication to reviewing the million+ posts made by users on here would be acceptable? "Should" is an interesting term.

There's certainly room for conversation / info on places beyond Switzerland and neighbouring countries and that's Off Topic; nothing new to report there.

That there are inconsistencies ought not to evoke such vapours; there are plenty of irregularly placed threads and posts. Plenty more are in the right areas. Mods can't be hand-holding each new poster nor can we be expected to review everything ever published. Many seem capable of getting it right, thankfully. There's no quick fix to the imperfection and patience and cooperation is appreciated. One thing at a time.

Come on, now, parsnips in Forum support? That takes the biscuit. Now then, does Co-op sell McVities Wheat Digestives?

Given the demand, economical sense would cater for the need. I see Foreign Goods sections increasing all the time on the supermarket shelves. (note to self, need more Rice) The analogy ends. The customer is always right, who are the Forums customers ?

Re: What's the point

I do see the point of not opening up travel tips to gazillions of world destinations, it would swell so organically. Search button yields whatever one needs just fine, no? There is no need to feel let down by people sticking to certain rules that make things simple..nothing is done here to aggravate users but the opposite, to facilitate.

There is a simple answer to all of this debate regarding the inconsistent application of consistent guidelines - The moderators should all be SWISS. End of.

Everyone would buy Swiss cheese and we would not even have to worry about parsnips anymore.

What would be worse is that they'd implement a posting rota, and I'd only be allowed to post on the first Thursday of every month ;(

What name does this Swiss Cheese go by ?
Bought some English cheese the other day...asked for it by name. Still have some left.

Surely the forum search button means that forum growth (of actual, solid, helpful information) is a good thing?

That also isn't necessarily true. There's an incredible amount of inertia left over from before The Local took over. In spite of the commercialism of the current owners, the general direction of the forum prior to them may no longer be relevant. The forum has grown to the extent that newbies will find and benefit from it whatever the Swiss:Non Swiss ratio is. The forum is the regular contributors and should be run for them. Papa Goose posting something about travelling to Prague is, in my opinion, on topic. Why? Because he's a trusted and long time member of this forum and the forum, generally, cares what he has to say. "What does this post have to do with Switzerland?" "It was written by Goose - he lives just down the road!"

Re: What's the point

The EF has two functions in my mind.

1. A place for information relating to Switzerland
2. A place for discussion of topics affecting people who live in Switzerland - a community as DB said.

A flight from Zürich, or a Swiss resident asking about how to get a British passport for their 16 year old, fall under the second function. Eat away at that too much, and you'll lose the community.

The question is - do we want a forum full of information, or do we want an online community of expats? If you want the former, you've got to have the latter, because it's the community that has the information.

Re: What's the point

Yep, the information is there because the chit chat is here. I have been looking for informations about Spain and Barcelona for months now in 3 differents languages and nowhere I found a forum that come even close to this one in term of informations but also in term of rapidity of responses given to questions.

Yes the mods here are having a lot of work, but this forum is successful because of the chit chat that bring a lot of traffic who brings a lof of chit chat.

Not many forums are that succesful...

but soon you will be the Forum expert on Barcelona- if we are allowed to ask. We have so many nationalities here, so it is great to have 'experts' on so many locations.

I beg to differ. The chit chat is a consequence of the information. It's the foundation of the Forum.
