When EFers do not show up as promised

I am writing this because I am getting really annoyed towards some behaviour people have demonstrated recently:

I am moving and have started selling some stuff on EF,generally people would contact me privately, discuss the items and arrange timeto pick up. Normally I am fairly flexible, so I would work around their suitable time. But some people are seriously taking this flexibility for granted!!! Not only not to show up at the agreed meeting time, and keep changing the time, or gone missing, or cancel the last minute not to show up or buy the item.

It has happened to me so many times now and it is getting really annoying.

When you agree to buy the items, I put them aside for you. When you agree to meet up, if other personal appointment comes up, I would need tomove or rearrange it because we have arranged the meeting first. Then why people are so inconsiderate? And think the world is revolved around them??

Not only they don’t show up or cancel the last minute of purchase, their attitudes really add more fuel to the fire. Some people are polite and apologetic due to whatever reason; some people simply don’t give a damn. They think it is ok to waste other people’s time and energy, as long as it’s not theirs. It is rude and pathetic.

Really thought living in Switzerland with ‘everything needs to be scheduled’ Swiss way would teach them something, clearly not.

Re: When EFers do not show up as promised

Same happened to me, and I got told off for having then sold the item to the person who DID show up when agreed. If I know you, fine, if I don't, it's first come first serve. There should be a seller/buyer's rep option on here too, or a thread where you can review people.

Re: When EFers do not show up as promised

Well it goes both ways. I have sent pm's in the past to people who told me they were holding an item on a certain date. Only to find out as I made arrangements to pick up the certain thing, they had sold it to some one else that had come an picked it up earlier; even though we had an agreement.
And this has happened often. Of course everyone is different.

But where I come from if some one says they are coming over to pick something up, you hold it until then. You don't go and sell it to some one else who comes 45 minutes earlier, and send a text or an email in very simple and plain text. Sorry your F'd.

I think that has become quite the environment on the EF. I have learned if I really want something, and there have already been 20 pm's sent for the same thing, if I make a cash offer for tonight, it's mine.

If there were rules on the EF on how things are sold that would be one thing. But this isn't Ricardo or Ebay, and one isn't punished if they don't follow thru.

If the sellers were kept to the same princips that the buyers were, then that would be a start. But who is going to regulate that on a volunteer basis?

That's life though isn't it, people have different standards and accepted wats of doing things. I used to give away a lot if stuff for free in the UK via freecycle every time I moved and people really did take the p there, often they seemed to place no value on the item because it was being given free so wouldn't even bother to call to say they weren't showing up.

Re: When EFers do not show up as promised

I came across this problem when we were selling pretty much all of our apartment contents when we moved from Zug. When I posted an ad on EF, I was inundated with queries, and was at a loss as to how to keep track of them all. Anyway, I devised a spreadhsheet, listing 'first interest', 'second interest' and so on, with a comment column regarding contact details and possible pick-up etc.

This worked pretty well and I made a point of telling an interested party if there was another interested party ahead of them. I had one interesting situation where one particular buyer tried their hardest to make me part with an item that I promised to someone else, but I stood my ground (you may remember!!!)

I am happy to say that everyone, with only one exception, turned up when they said they would. However, that said, I know that it is very tricky at times to keep on top of things unless you take a pretty methodical approach to keeping track of all the offers that come in.

I've had a bad experience with the EF market place but in all honesty it's a free service so what more can one expect?

To police the section would need at least a couple of moderators dedicated to the section.

Re: When EFers do not show up as promised

I got hypothermia (not exaggerating) waiting 40 minutes at the train station in Thalwil in the middle of winter...for someone who failed to turn up with the goods and failed to contact me...or apologise, or respond to my follow up email to let them know that they had let me down... after that experience I am very cautious about making random arrangements to meet up with people. I make sure it's totally convenient for me!

Re: When EFers do not show up as promised

I have had with one exception, all positive experiences here. I've met some really nice people who have come to collect things when they said they would and were very appreciative.

Not living in Zurich seems to be a bit of a disadvantage. I am willing to ship items.

For our upcoming moving sale I will probably end up using Ricardo as EFers seem unwilling to want to pay for delivery. That is my only complaint. I have, delivered large items, and driven a considerable disatance, but will only do so when the buyer is willing to pay for my time and expense.

Re: When EFers do not show up as promised

My suggestion and wish would be that Efers sell on a first come first served basis, like shops do. It woud stop all this race to bagsy items by PM's and then people deciding not to buy/turn up etc. It would make life easier for the seller too.
An exception would be to reserve something for say 1 hour to allow someone to travel etc if they say they are on their way...
