the point is that a search was already done, the one that landed them in EF. Hence, they are already finding the correct response somewhere and being directed here. So tuning the search function (although much needed) is secondary. What the functio could do is prioritize stickies over other threads. any other ideas?
So they do a google search for whatever brings them here, but then want to search for something else. Not everyone knows how to restrict google to a single site search, and hey, there's a search box at the top of the screen.

Can I buy dishwasher tablets in Switzerland? Well the search function brings up nothing useful, so perhaps I should start a new thread.

I for one hate the search function, I generally only use it these days when I know the exact name of the thread I'm looking for and even then it often takes me 2 or 3 searches to find the one I want. For a newbie it must be even more daunting.
That is very true. Sometimes I am looking for threads that I know do exist, just I don't remember the exact title - and what I get is everything else but not what I was looking for.

I'm not interested in kitchen appliances or pills. Why would I choose "OR" (even if that were an option on the search box)?

Besides, I still can't see any thread that tells me where to buy dishwasher tablets.

That's the point though - the "and" search gives 1 unrelated result - the "or" search is not the default option, and gives 63 results with varying degrees of relevance.

It should be possible (?) to have a happy medium between the two...

There is. Use the advanced or google powered searches. But it's hardly obvious to a new user.

Re: That question that has been asked a X times before..

So what's the big deal with someone asking something for the nth time?

Yes, some people are lazy. Some are rude. Some aren't as clued up on advanced features or power searching. Some didn't come here via Google. I, for one, was told about this site. I recently wanted to know what the suffix -ikon meant and I did search first, but nothing relevant came up. Fortunately a few helpful souls remembered a relevant thread and pointed it out. Should I have been chastised for not having the necessary search skills to find that thread?

And another thing....information is time sensitive. Some things need to be asked again as a 3 year old thread may not be accurate.

You don't have to reply if you object, and if everyone ignores the request the poster will find another approach.

Any hoe.....so where can I find brown sugar?

That's a good point - some of the forums I have seen are like a ghost town with a new post or thread only popping up once in a blue moon where the forum for all intents and purposes, dead.

Alternatively there are forums like this one which are a blaze of information including noise and duplication in amongst the nuggets of detail.

I guess it's a delicate balance. The mods trash or merge threads as they see necessary but the work seems to be relentless.

Hear, Hear.

Post fresh - mods merge, or prepare for flak.

[I would like a search function where I can enter the username of the thread starter, and add my username if I know I made a reply (and any others that I remember), so it can cross-reference username contributors - when I can't remember the title. Or does it already exist, and I just need a facepalm?, d'oh]

What about adding a tag cloud to the search page? At least it would help answer the most frequently asked questions.

Yep, could be done. As could almost all of the search function suggestions. The issue is it needs someone with the time and the knowhow to patch these modifications into "our" forum, and then de-bug the resulting "new" forum to make sure it still works as it should.

Like I said above, I think (?) this was supposed to be one of the benefits of having The Local / Editor Bob onside, that such improvements would be more readily forthcoming.

Have you seen the cloud? It's wierd;

At least Basel is bigger than Geneva, Bern and Zug. And Zurich doesn't get a mention.

That says to me that Nannys getting abducted from apartments in Basel is a huge problem!!

If it's on the internet it must be true!

Yes, it's terrible isn't it. A newbie comes along and interupts your playtime with a pertinent question regarding life in Switzerland. How inconsiderate of them. I mean how do they know that they are disturbing the 5 hours a day you're sitting at your work desk doing bugger all other than filling up the forum with useless chit chat.

Yes there is a search function, but even though it would appear that all questions have been answered these may not be specific to a newbies circumstances, not to mention vBulletin is a forum, not a knowledge base. Both are databases, but have different functions.

It used to be the case that newbies would come and have their questions answered. Those newbies would then become regulars, and then answer the newbies questions - with pleasure. It would seem these days that there are very few new regulars. I suspect the forum veloceraptors have each had their piece of flesh, and there's not much left to answer questions anymore.

i guess there was also a time when a mod would also take consideration of the search function requests instead of going a tirade about how the users use a forum as a personal playground.

the times ... they are A changin.

Noted -- but be aware that mods do not own, administer or in any way run EF. We have no power to implement changes such as the ones proposed here.

Any user, on the other hand, is welcome to write to the Administrator with helpful suggestions.

In my opinion, Slaphead's comments are accurate and very relevant -- and hardly a tirade. For good examples of a tirade, have a look at some of the obnoxious posts made by some of the long-time forum regulars to whom Slaphead refers.
