Re: Avatars

Ok I'll say it, stop the press!

Zuger's avatar is offensive for muslim who believe and/or practice. This is an important month and Eid is tonight.

I don't care if you think than believing is stupid, a little bit of respect for the people who share this forum with you goes a long way.

Same as we wouldn't put a picture of the Nazism, aren't we? Putting a picture of a muslim looking guy ( Mohamed or anyone else) with a bomb on his head is pure provocating and disrespectful.

If mods are ok with this, honestly, shame on you. You should show better judgement toward e-v-e-r-y members of this community.

Re: Avatars

OK, I see what you mean now. Let's hope it is just 'strange' humour - better than the SDP minaret poster at least. Must say his last one 'worried' me more as I kept wondering who it was - him- especially as he'd mentioned 'lingerie' and champagne in his posts.

I thought Eid was tomorrow - but maybe the date has changed.

Happy Eid - Eid Mubarak to all Muslim friends and family here and around the world. Last week must have been very tough for you with that heat.

I'd be interested to get a response on this point.....maybe its been dealt with privately which is fair enough, but I hope it hasn't been ignored as its a serious point and deserves respect.

LOL,

Ok it still offending me. It is disrespectful to those who believe. And I would do the same for any other religions, to make it clear.

It is not a Muslim fight, it is just a request for respect and freaking common sense.

what exactly is the prohibition against depicting the Prophet?
( no, I didn't use the "M" word )

Re: Avatars

On boards where I moderate, we differentiate between images posted in a thread and avatars that appear on every post a member posts.

If an avatar is deliberately meant to offend, is associated with hating, denigrating of race, ethnicity, religion, is sexually explicit, displays graphic or express violence and/or may be inappropriate when viewed by a member's family, children, friends and/or work colleagues, we moderators request that the member change his/her avatar. Should the member not comply with the request, we remove the avatar, and if necessary, the member.

Moderators seek moderation for the sake of all members and maintaining a standard appropriate to the purpose, rules and spirit of the board, which, ultimately, with consideration given to protests, objections and differing points of view, is at the sole discretion of the board's staff.

To be completely honest, I don't care who is on the picture, I don't even care if they draw his picture, really.

I know it is writted in the Quran that no one should picture him.

What does offend me is to see someone from a faith : Islam here, being represented with a bomb on his head.

Islam is already badly perceived by non-muslinm because of all those nuts out there who commit terrorists attacks. Do you think we are happy about it? But showing a picture like this, is soooo insulting.

Why someone would want to be represented on this forum with such a hateful image? To insult? in provocation?

It is to us, on this forum, to decide what is acceptable to show or not show, and this in respect for ALL the members.

I find this picture very offensive, because it reminds me the nutters out there, and it shows Zuger supporting it, somehow.

Is it to have a laugh at them? The translation of the intention is definitely not succesful! If he had the same picture with a big X on it and something saying stop the nutters, stop the hatred, it would have been different.

And in case someone may have forget,

I am not a believer, I was raised as a Catholic and I felt off the religions looooond time ago.

Why I bother? Because I believe in the respect of the members of this forum. And if it was an other kind of picture representing hatred I'll be writting about it too.

1) it's not a picture but a drawing, a cartoon.

2) I don't think they'll be any harm to draw a skinhead (skinhead= what I think is equivalent to a bearded man with a muslim icon on his turban)

3) What's a picture of the Nazism? Anyway whatever it is please put it! I'll be happy to explain anyone why that "group" was doing wrong, and why. It's history. Not talking about it would be hypocrisy and stupid.

4) laicity: authority dont take involvment in religious matters.

Beliefs or non-beliefs should stay in you head, your heart, your home.

Not in puclic, nor a public forum.

Hatred should not have a place here either

But you are talking about something else, something obvious which we can only agree: Hatred should not have a place here either.

What about the facts like:

1) it's not a picture but a drawing, a cartoon. fact

2) I don't think they'll be any harm to draw a skinhead =my humble opinion (skinhead= what I think is "nazi equivalent" to a bearded man with a muslim icon on his turban. Fact)

3) What's a picture of the Nazism? Anyway whatever it is please put it! I'll be happy to explain anyone why that "group" was doing wrong, and why. It's history. Not talking about it would be hypocrisy and stupid.= fact

4) laicity: authority dont take involvment in religious matters.=fact

This looks like the beginning of Dan's Brown book (my friends do know what I think about Dan Brown's "facts").

I have mentioned this before. It seems that the message didn't get through:

A drawing is not less offensive because it's not a photo. A cartoon, no matter how childish it is made, is as offensive as words (written or spoken) can be. A cartoon provides a message. This message can be extremely offensive or rude, or funny and harmless, according to the idea it bares.

Do not juggle with this silly idea that just 'coz it's a drawing it's harmless.

Iconoclasm existed for a reason people! Images can hurt and provoke hatred.

Whether Zuger avatar is appropriate or not, I leave to the mods to decide. But please, I beg you, don't keep beating on this childish idea that a cartoon is just a harmless funny!

When I draw a cartoon, serious or silly one, I have to be very careful not to flame someone. It's not as easy as it looks.

Thank you!

Thank you,

I didn't write you a note because the purpose of this thread was not directed at you (but you inspired me).

I wanted to know why some avatars, like the one I had from Benetton was removed because I am guessing it was offending, but yours wasn't. And how far someone can go when it comes to avatars. Longbyt partly answered me. Which wasn't very satisfying since it shows no common ground but more of a case to case according of the will of a mod compared to an other mod.

It is sadly, a lack of consistancy.

And to be also perfectly honest, I assumed that if you didn't find a problem to put up this avatar, you wouldn't have care about my opinion. And it would have become a fight which isn't my intention as explained above.
