Sounds like a walk down Langstrasse any evening of the week...

Re: Is EF too cliquey?

Because I'm a semi-pro expat and because I think the question is interesting, I gave it a bit more thought....I've been on the internet now for almost 30 years, well before the WWW and anyone thought that having a PC was cool and the same dynamics apply now as they did then, but expat groups are special in terms of the ways in which certain groups form. There are two types of expat as a general rule: roughly, those who are positive and those who are negative (overall).

If folks are honest, especially in a place like this that is advertised more or less as an alpine paradise, expectations do not meet reality which tends to lead to grim views on most things. I'll be honest, I'm not a lifer here as I'm a rule breaking engineer, not a porsche-driving accountant who has time or care to gripe at someone for some minor rule infraction. But...I try to find the silver lining every day even though most days I fail at that. I try. I think that most of us (at least those of the yankee variety) try to find the positive and hang with the less gloomy folks. Those who are determined to be unhappy tend to stick together, too. It's a survival skill. So, I tend to think that in spite of the intersection of both groups, the poles of positive and negative tend to form the most representative groups. Both are valid and necessary and, though we might dislike some of the more grim posts, it's representative of what expat life is like, especially here so I don't begrudge most of the more rough posts except when it gets personal and dirty.
