I suggest that negative rep should automatically be applied to people who start too many threads and never make subsequent postings to those threads or to other threads. That is basically forum spam and The Local does it all the time.

| | Re: Open message to 'The Local' | Quote: | | | | | Honestly, I would rather that you didn't quit the position.
Since this is the first time I heard you were a spam deputy, you either were doing a good job or a bad one. Regardless of which it was, you never complained. That rocks in MY book. (although, im not completely sure what the job entails. do you have to buy spam cans for the mods???) | | | | | I would prefer not to have quit the position but I have my principles. If 'The Local' can convince me that they will communicate properly in future, I may reconsider, as I said initially.
A Spam Deputy is basically, addition support to mods. The only 'power' we have is to ban new members who post spam etc.
In addition, I have been reporting various other things to mods to assist them as they cannot be everywhere at once. This is not part of a Spam Deputy's role.

| | Re: Open message to 'The Local' | Quote: | | | | | | | | | | I just got mine too (which I haven't bothered reading yet) and at the bottom of the email there is a link where you can delete your account. Seeing as we have always been told that it is impossible to delete your account (you can just not log on again) I thought I would take a look at what options it gives you.
It doesn't. You just get a blank page with the message "Your account has been deleted. An email has been sent to confirm this"
Now, maybe I need to log off before all of my posts bite the dust.... but I've just found the confirmation email in my junk folder for some reason. Shall I click the confirmation link, or leave it for a while? | Quote: | | | | | Hmm, seems it won't let me leave the date of birth field empty. | | | | | You can of course put any date in and choose to hide your birthday completely.

It wouldn't surprise me if this increased soon, but I doubt if they care. | The following 2 users would like to thank Deep Purple for this useful post: | |

I'll post this again as my last one seems to have been removed. From the new T&Cs: | Quote: | | | | Jurisdiction
This User Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Sweden, without regard to principles of conflict of laws, and the parties submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Swedish Courts. | | | | | I'm also deleting my photos, as they are mine and not the Local's, who doesn't seem all that local either...

I have also deleted my photos, though I am sure they could be accessed from back ups if The Local were that determined.
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know why a few of my pictures do not have the option to delete them?

I also just received and read the T&Cs and did not much like them - in particular the bits about Perpetual Copyright and "we, and anyone we are or may be connected with, reserves the right to spam you".
I also noticed the No politics and No religion clauses - that will quieten some discussions, right?
As I don't have the big need anymore I will consider my position - pity, as I have found the forum extremely valuable.
When and how did the takeover by The Local happen?

| | Re: Open message to 'The Local' | Quote: | | | | | Here is a copy of a message to 'The Local' from me.
"Please remove me from the position of Spam Deputy and also note that I will no longer be 'reporting posts' unless they directly affect me, or contributing to the support and development of English Forum.
If 'The Local' can convince me that their management practices will change to involve members, I may reconsider this.
These actions are due to The Local's failure to communicate their plans to members and implementing changes without any notice. When concerns and changes have been advised they have generally been ignored or glossed over." | | | | | A reasonable measure.
I have never been a member of a forum that was owned by a company and understand that they want to make money out of it ("us" I guess). I thought it would be limited to advert banners from language schools and the odd supermarket. But if they talk about making purchases from The Local what does it actually mean? Would one need a paid-for account to post in the commercial or market section for example?

| | Re: Open message to 'The Local'
As someone who has contributed advice and resources onto this forum, I am concerned that they will take over the right to my information - I'd like to think that it's available to whomever I share it with (for example, the sticky on childcare resources)....I might want to copy and post it on another site some time...
and I'd like to walk away with my shopping tour too - if I delete my account will it remove all my posts as well, or do I have to go back and shred it all ? What stops the Local from just taking an old version, stripping the information and re-posting it as 'their own' ?

Maybe it's just to much work and will put them off as not productive and not profitable enough. |
