As someone who has contributed advice and resources onto this forum, I am concerned that they will take over the right to my information - I'd like to think that it's available to whomever I share it with (for example, the sticky on childcare resources)....I might want to copy and post it on another site some time...

and I'd like to walk away with my shopping tour too - if I delete my account will it remove all my posts as well, or do I have to go back and shred it all ? What stops the Local from just taking an old version, stripping the information and re-posting it as 'their own' ?

This license will come to an end at the time you remove such Contents from the Services and upon your notification to THE LOCAL. Regardless of this, a residual or back-up copy of the Contents posted may remain on the servers after you have removed the Contents from the Services, and THE LOCAL maintains the rights to those copies.
This is what the terms of use says about content that has been deleted by you. In general you keep the rights on what you posted but the Local (and its affiliated companies) can use it for free.

Technically, they could do as they wish with the information. I won't post the ideas here as they may be tempted to use them

They can sell the information in my posts.

You're too late: there are several sites and books publishing info for newbies in Switzerland and they rarely if ever reference EF as a source. I sincerely doubt any of these mushrooming groups have the manpower nor energy and knowledge to gather 10% of what EF offers for free.

All a bit windy, this thread.

The logical conclusion of this is, you don't mind them selling your bollocks...

Re: Open message to 'The Local'

I've written tons of useless bilge over the last four years.

If the Local wants it, the Local is welcome to it.

It's got to be better than the shite the Local normally posts.

frankly, whilst it might be a bit annoying and cheeky that they put this into the member profile AND defaulted to opted-in, I couldn't give a rats arse.
I've got to agree. After all EF is still up and running, isn't it?

Here is a copy of a message to 'The Local' from me.

"Please remove me from the position of Spam Deputy and also note that I will no longer be 'reporting posts' unless they directly affect me, or contributing to the support and development of English Forum.
I hope you reconsider. Being a spam deputy and reporting posts improves the experience for all of us.

Re: Open message to 'The Local'

We're all stuffed - just read the Terms of Use more closely, and found this in the prohibited posts section:

Quote:
criminal activity such as drug dealing, trafficking, child pornography, fraud, obscene material, gambling, harassment, stalking, spamming, sending of harmful computer files, theft of trade secrets or intrusion of copyright or patent rights;
Guess I'd better delete my account, or just stop posting ...

Still, it looks fairly standard for online forums. Bit annoying that they say they can send us spam whenever they feel like it, but still fairly standard.
As for them having the free rights to use our content however they like in other areas, that's also annoying - but standard. At least it's "non-exclusive", so you can still try to sell your bollocks somewhere else as well.

It was not a decision that I took lightly. I have been upset by the way previous changes were implemented, so it was not a snap decision.

I don't have any major objections to any of the individual changes. There are some minor irritations with them.

I have been removed from the Spam Deputy list and no longer have those 'powers'. Nothing so far has made me think that I made the wrong decision.

Re: Open message to 'The Local'

I see your point, Deep Purple. We should have posted to the Announcements forum simultaneous to the email going out. I don't know why we didn't because in hindsight it seems like the obvious thing to do. Afterall, that's what the Announcements forum is for. Will definitely keep it in mind for next time.

Meanwhile, as requested, and as you've since noted, you have been taken off the Spam Deputy list.

Just to try to keep up to date with this, what would we assess the current mood as:
Outraged, Indifferent or somewhere in between?

I'm afraid that these options aren't covered by the new terms and conditions/ your HMO.

Because, generally speaking, those who don't care won't respond while those who are rabidly for or against the poll will shout as loud and as often as they can ...
