alright, there is no issue with personal data - you, the member, can delete any post and can change your membership details. Yes, slowly, but.............

the new T&Cs are wank but post with that in mind.
A clever IT friend of mine told me he could write a script that could automatically delete all of his posts on a forum at the tap of a key. But what do I know, he could have been talking out of his bum for all I know.

the issue is if there is history for each record in MySQL - and backups.

you can write to them and ask for a report of what personal information they have on you - for a nominal fee to cover the work, they are obliged under EU Personal Data Directives to give you a report.

Upon reflection, that would be enormously amusing.

If he was clever, he wouldn't be in IT...

Admin and/or mods have global options to to do such. I've banned and removed all the bannee's posts on other boards, but members do not have the options, other than to delete single posts individually.

OTOH, you can globally delete all your attachments through your Control Panel.

not quite true, you can do certain things from the client side but of course having access to the sql database is the easiest.....

let's just say you can get your post links and work out which action you want "postreply" in my case here

It's technically possible. But all posts could be restored at the touch of a button too.

Oh my... it's suddenly very cold in here..
Who let Jadis take over Narnia ?

How does Swedish law apply in Switzerland ?

I thought that your data belongs to you and that you have the right to request it's deletion at any point in time ?

Apparently not. In Sweden at least.

I hate to not follow the bandwagon but....

Does it really matter?

Haven't we all ticked loads of T&Cs with Apple, with our telephone contracts, with our printer software, with our employers......we've probably signed our data and life away twenty times over.....and by and large, we didn't get screwed by anybody...

I mean, isn't life too short to get so angry about this stuff?

Of course, they could do any of those things. But they probably won't because then they wouldn't have a business.

Well, I could write a perl script that could grab all the post IDs and then delete them individually. However, I suspect that the database either wouldn't allow for entire threads to be deleted to maintain integrity, i.e. if your userid started a topic/thread, and then were deleted, unless all the children under that thread id were deleted, they'd be orphaned. So, you could probably delete individual posts, just not anything that has dependent posts.

If anyone ever managed to actually read the EULAs for any Apple software or MS software, in the multitudes of pages of legal goop, we'd never touch our systems again. Most of it is just legal stuff to keep options open and to protect themselves in case of a massive lawsuit. I'm sure I've violated every EULA I've agreed to....not really worried about jail and/or Apple selling my photos to the multitude of 1 that might buy them.

I'm new here so I don't know all the history behind the ire, but would agree that it hasn't been communicated very well from the Local's end. I enjoyed the Local in Sweden when I was living there and I've not heard anything about folks getting mishandled by them. Then, again, I don't think they bought an existing community website up there.

True. My moan is not about the terms and conditions specifically, just the appalling lack of communication on the part of The Local.

I just tried deleting my account, but the posts stayed. I guess this is to allow them to 'un-delete' if you change your mind.

Re: Change of TaC: How to delete my posts?

If only there was another site we could all mass migrate to. If such a place existed we would all be able to shoot the breeze freely together. (see what i did there -for those who know)

I did offer to purchase the site when Mark passed, but i could not even get my foot in the door to throw my money on the table.

My pockets are deep, its a shame.

cheers
SC

Re: Change of TaC: How to delete my posts?

But really, what is the big change here? I knew it was public when I joined, I found the forum through google in the first place plus I see numerous "guests" lurking on this board all the time.... If random people can view my posts why should I be bothered about The Local using them?
