True, but the MySQL server would need to be doing binary logs, and while that's the sane way to do things, folks rarely do it. ;-)

I don't know that it's accurate to say that folks 'rarely' do it, but it is rare that folks backup and secure the data in a mysql db properly (or any database if you really want to get to the ugly truth). If it's hosted at Dyn, my educated guess is that this isn't an issue as I know the guys who started the business and they're knowledgeable. However, the real issue is that mysql isn't a real database...but that's just bait for a discussion I'm not fit to have at the moment.

Indeed. Most people think that mysqldump is all you need. And, often it is.

I might also hasten to add, since I've worked in the Nordic countries in IT, that the laws governing privacy online are extensive, much, much, moreso than in Switzerland (at least from what I have experience professionally in spite of it's legendary neutrality). If I had to choose which country I'd rather be online and protected thereby, it'd be Sweden without question.

When you've got a small and uncomplicated db it is, sure. But when you've got a monster that it was never designed to accommodate then it gets much more interesting in terms of clock time and restore capabilities. And then there's the needed optimization since it doesn't automatically defragment and flush deleted data and....yes, I've had too much wine.

BTW- Love the "Jeannie" avatar. Still love Endorra myself.

How about some of this:
Well, I have a couple cans in the fridge should you run out (one from 1999).

And some Norwegian rakfisk as well (only 4 or 5 years old, though)

Re: Change of TaC: How to delete my posts?

Excellent explanation !
Thank you, I've always wanted to ask that question
I suppose we'll all calm down once the dust has settled.
People are always wary of change until they get used to it.

once posted, your data may appear to belong to an entity called Sky and it'll be indexed and cached on many search engines before the day is out.

so in the end, if the local does nothing with it, it's the same as before.

Sky is not really personally identifiable information to most people.

the server is in the US and the owner of the server has some ownership of the data (IIRC).

So all-in-all, whatever the T&Cs, be prepared that once you click submit, your control is gone.

Just like any digital medium. Email? Check.

They have not done anything yet, wait and see. But there are some interesting indicators.

Alright Kemosabe...
My post was directed at those harumphing over the shocking end of the world email. EF has already been copy pasta'd by other commercial groups - it's inevitable. I doubt the Local have the energy to 'strip' the Forum.

UM, you're a rather fair and compassionate mod and you've been dealing tirelessly, for quite a long time now, with people's whims and emotions on EF.
Isn't it normal that people react to a novelty ? Change takes time to digest no ?

----------------------------------

We've all felt very comfy and cosy here, laughing, debating, discussing, making friends etc. EF seems like a safe haven where one could just relax (note: everything to do with emotion)
The new T&Cs have brought home the black & white reality that it's not. It's a business, a commerce, and an online forum. (we tend to forget that).
Whether one agrees with the T&Cs or not, it does remain a rather daunting reality check.

EF some times reminds me of the movie MiB, where there's a community and a world within one locker.

Indeed. I think most vBulletin forums really never get big enough for that to become a problem. I'm not sure if vB is using InnoDB or MyISAM data engines. But MyISAM is a disaster in waiting, as it's not ACID compliant.
