5Aveci is gone too.

I just wanted to add something....

Can people please remember before deleting themselves, that this forum has provided masses of support to people here in CH and if we all flounce they'll be nobody to:

*collectively support each other in times of tragedy
*raise funds to help families in the event of tragic circumstances
*house doggies, cats, birds when they need our help
*offer beds for the night when people are stuck
*help people when they need a safe place when scared of their partner
*create social events to link expats together when the first arrive

These things won't exist with a databank of useful information. Agreed that their is a wealth of knowledge already here but you can't beat human interaction, even if it merely a kind word.
I'll miss the curry nights, GrumpyGrapefruit's cheese events, the curry nights, the now-defunkt Regular Wednesday Drinks 'n' Chat and the Sunday Brunch (which I wanted to take over after Nils left). And I missed JustRose's pubcrawl and was looking forward to the next one.

I really hope someone can suggest a server with less onerous conditions.

while the other restaurant has the same conditions, it's from the start. No change in the middle of your 2.4k posts or anything.

As long as we are straight from the beginning then it's all good. I guess an acceptable term for me,( if i was one of those who wanted to protect their privacy) would be to have the T&C apply only from the 27th on. not to the past.

Why have all the buttons been removed from all of my posts? I cannot delete my stuff now. I see no option but to close my account if I cannot remove any libel posts I wrote.

Would it be that of a problem to setup a new forum, or even better use the framework/services offered by the Stackoverflow/Stackexchange?

been done, it's a ghost town, although I think they are airing the place as we speak
Hmm, yes the Ghost Town forum. In all the hubub that's going on it's probably been noted already and I missed it, but they have the same "horrible" () crap in their T&C.

Quote:
Ghost Town does not claim ownership of any Content the User may submit or make available via the Ghost Town Forum and the User shall continue to own all rights in such Content and have the right to use such Content in any way User may choose. However, by submitting to or making available any Content on the Ghost Town Forum User agrees to grant Ghost Town a perpetual, royalty-free, irrevocable, non-exclusive, sub-licensable right and license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, make available to the public (on the Ghost Town Forum or elsewhere), and exercise all copyright and publicity rights with respect to Content worldwide and/or to incorporate the User contribution in other works in any media now known or later developed for the full term of any rights that may exist in the User Content as Ghost Town may require. By submitting or making available any Content to the Ghost Town Forum, the User also hereby agrees to waive and does hereby waive all moral rights in that Content. Ghost Town may at any time without notice to the User, grant the same or other rights in respect of the User Content to third parties without payment to the User and sell, distribute or otherwise publish the User Content outside of the Ghost Town Forum.
But now it seems that the ire is directed at how the new T&C has been delivered, "that dress makes your butt look great!" "whaaat?! so my other ones make it look fat! Bastard!". Sure enough, the New Owners are dolts at communication, but the EF is still the EF. If people can't see that and want to go it's sad, for real, but you know- it's just a forum.

Wait- no. It's the m*therf**king EF, there is no other forum like it. I'm staying whether people like it or not.

If you've written anything you're concerned about, contact a mod. (Best way is probably the "Report Post" button.) As a general rule we're happy to remove personally identifying information on request, whole posts/threads only in exceptional circumstances.

Hats off for mentioning curry night twice. I always knew it was the most popular event

Actually, it is. I still don't know what happened (see this post) but my best guess is that it seems to have been a technical glitch on Ittigen's side. It definitely wasn't a moderator or admin action; I've checked the logs on his profile.

But let's all have a go at the mods anyway, eh? After all it could have been them....

EDIT: removed my groan. Sorry, I am just feeling a bit 'got at' recently, what with one thing and another.

...don't know which buttons are being referred to here, but a couple of times lately I've seen buttons disappear mysteriously and after navigating around and a couple of refreshes they were there again.

Considering I have also gotten the "Database error" page a few times in the last few days, I can well imagine there is a glitch on the loose somewhere. Seen it on other vBulletin boards too, so maybe no reason for anybody to feel it's personal.

Oh God...I admit it. It was me. I regularly mess with the code to make buttons appear and disappear at random.....don't blame the forum, I act alone. I promise not to do it again. Until next week when I'm going to do it continuously.

Re: How seriously are you considering departing EF permanently?

The buttons on my posts have been back now a few hours, and I accept the software glitch explanation, thank you MathNut for checking the logs.

There still remains the problem of retroactively changing the terms conditions. I would be much happier if the posts made before 27 October are treated under the old conditions. Is that not possible?

Honestly I have no idea. I have a sort of vague impression that contracts can't be changed retroactively (could your bank write to you tomorrow and tell you they are imposing a monthly handling fee on your account - to be applied retroactively since 1986? Surely not!) but I'm not a legal sort and I really don't know.

Supposing for the sake of argument that the change doesn't and can't apply retroactively - then the old T&Cs would apply to your old posts. These stated that anything you post becomes public domain. So either way I reckon The Local can theoretically* do what it likes with your old posts and you wouldn't see a dime.

*'Theoretically' because I don't see what they can do with most of our posts, really, other than use them to cross-promote EF on sister websites. (Put it this way: would you pay for a "Best of Complaints Corner" coffee table book? Would anybody?)

I would, given the size of said theoretical book, it could fix the short leg my coffee table has.
