I'm happy to naïvely believe The Local are *not likely* to fleece our info for their future plans, but feel they want the legal OK from Users to use EF content so not to become mired in suits should someone's post be used in promotion. Their business is in appealing to advertisers - slowly slowly in Switzerland it seems - not in compiling 'best of complaints corner'.
You are probably right. It would be nice to hear that from them. Their silence leads to suspicion and rumours.

This is now considered forum "stalking" I'm about to write a complaint. So if that leads to a ban, it's my fault you clear on that!?

Seems that was what he wanted.

I wrote a lovely long post defending the mods, defending Christians and defending you.

It had bullet points and posting rate comparisons and even a bit of a family tree. It also asked what he was trying to prove by getting a second ban and climaxed in a witty, if a little obscure, put down.

You'd have loved it.

But the thread got locked and EF ate the reply.

I'm leaving this post eating dump!
(my lunch is well overdue)

A "Do No Evil" clause? Not sure that sort of promise is worth much, considering what everyone else is up to. I don't see the point of trying to keep EF as some sort of ivory tower of innocence; there are third parties already cherry picking our work. What difference does it make?

Also, it all gets a little egocentric; the foundations of this site were laid with the motivation of sharing useful info on life in Switzerland and helping each other, not personal gain - my only grounds for staying on. A fair few members use it for chat or self regard. It's becoming unusual to find a thread dealing with somebody's dilemma which doesn't become mired in banter. Thanks and praise to those who make the effort to keep the bar above tabloid level.

Peace and love.

Is that the book that you were planning to pay people to read - in which case not it is on EF - it will be the Local that will have to pay people to read it.

I'm going to read 8,734 copies of that book - at 19.95chf each - so by my calculations the Local now owes me 174,243.30chf

My understanding is that "the Local" only issues payments in the form of postage stamps... Swedish postage stamps.

Ja, det är bra

Which I'd send to my father-in-law (in Sweden) - who'd convert into Swedish Groats - pay into his National Bank of Mooselandia account - before doing an international transfer to my account.

That makes me one of lifes Winners - and entitled to drink tiger blood.

Re: How seriously are you considering departing EF permanently?

Hi,

I haven't bothered to read all 100 pages of posts and comments about this...so sorry if my £0.02 worth goes over already covered ground....and if this is in the wrong thread...etc...etc...

I got the so-called mail in my spam filter. I really could not be fagged to read some lengthy set of Terms and Conditions which are phrased in the worst possible and most ambiguous English which would provide a field day for anyone with a modicum of legal expertise.

There has been no general sticky post from the site owners / mods explaining in plain English (clue: this is the "English" forum) what the the new Ts and Cs actually amount to. It really is not clear: am I now supposed to go and provide new information in my profile which I did not provide before when I originally signed up umpteen years ago or risk account deletion?

The Local will no doubt get away with their underhand treatment of forum members - who contribute the content - as in the absence of a suitable alternative most of us rely upon the EF for finding out where social events are taking place or to keep abreast of expat events and in the end, apathy will work in their favour. But I have it feeling it will come back to bite them in the end.

I probably won't delete my account - as tempting as it is to do so - but I can see myself contributing less and visiting less. For me, EF was always a social network without all the anti-privacy cr.p of Facebook. Now I really can't see the difference.

Cheers,
Nick

No argument from me there.

Not everybody logs in every week (and relatively few newcomers seem to read the announcements and stickies at all) so we felt personal email was the most thorough way of notifying people. In hindsight of course you are right, it wouldn't have hurt us to do both - all the more so as some people (me included) seem not to have gotten the email.

Anyway, as explained in the email: if you do nothing, nothing will happen. It will simply be assumed after October 27th that you are in agreement with the new T&C. You do not need to provide any new information, and your account is in no danger of being deleted unless you delete it yourself.
