Re: Thread split following economisto's removal

Blimey - had visitors for a couple of days- then the old biddies from the village for lunch today - and come back to THIS

Déjà vu actually - same happened on a French Forum a couple of years back - same reasons, same reaction (eg creation of an independent Forum by members).

Bonne chance to all.

Re: Thread split following economisto's removal

The level of drama going on in the forum of late is quite frankly, just, well... sad. Like really, really sad. Somewhere along the line this place was elevated from a place for people to ask questions on life in CH and have a cheeky chat or banter about relevant topics, to a full-blown Life-Replacement Platform™ that people seem to treat with such gravitas that even complete non-issues tend to create shltstorms of the nth degree.

I used to be a bit guilty of taking it all a bit seriously myself, and getting involved in silly spats about the most petty things, but then I realised that beyond being a good platform for meeting some lovely people, and finding out some truly useful info, none of it really matters in the slightest, and that sitting there making 30-40 pointless posts per day does nothing except serve to bog you down by making feel like you have to get involved in anything and everything that goes on with the forum drama, no matter how insignificant... and that's not healthy. Im not meaning that in a "go outside and get some fresh air/sunlight" kind of way (im a heavy PC/net user in general so ive no room to talk), but I do think that lately some people (not everyone of course, just some) need to step back, give themselves a sharp slap around the mush, and stop taking everything that happens on this forum so chuffing seriously.

Re: Thread split following economisto's removal

To be honest all this drama is the making of Editor Bob. All he had to do was say

'Due to differences in opinion, economisto is no longer a moderator at Englishforum'

Instead he's created this daft drama and managed to triple the membership at the other place.

Re: Thread split following economisto's removal

HEY !!

It's a forum.. it's not your momma or dad or long lost friend or employer.
It's just a forum on the internet like thousands of others.

I owe loyalty and total discretion to my family, my friends, my job.
But I like to dine at different restaurants and I don't wish to taste the same food every day.

It's not a betrayal to be a member of several forums.
It's not a marriage..

I've signed up on all 3 because that's where my friends are (and future friends to be).

Whatever happens between two people in disagreement, should remain private to be sorted out by the people involved peacefully and with quiet discretion.

Dragging feelings and details and facts into the public domain, leads to unnecessary pandemonium, partiality and imaginary factions.

What ever for ?
We all like each other, we have more in common than the contrary, we enjoy each other's company, we like to read others and to write and we're brought together by a common desire for friendship.

Come on let's focus on the positive feelings and work towards a return to peace.
It's soon going to be cold out, it would be such a pity to lose the cosiness and the warmth.

And you, with all your experience, honestly think that that would have been accepted by the members without even one or two of them starting Threads giving a few likely background scenarios? Haven't we seen all this before? One thousand and one suggestions as the the 'real reason' and all the interesting details.

Speculation is fine. Speculation can be ignored by admin. This post by editor bob...well to be honest he got roasted...another situation which has been handled badly by the admin.

Let's just say that the unexpected 'arrival' of new information was not a good example of PR and the phrasing announcing Economisto's being taken off the Mod team was guaranteed to put the cat among the pigeons again.

The whole "he who shall not be named" business (aka, "the other forum") is an attitude that I associate with totalitarian regimes...
Not sure how much experience you have with totalitarian regimes, but mine is extensive . To make that analogy with how freely we discuss stuff here seems slightly bizarro. Plus, the members are not executed by the establishment, but self deleted by themselves.

Info has spread, anyways, somewhere else and faster, so why bother with ill looking links here, that had to be removed and that are not posted to make this community a better place.

Communal living, in my experience, is the most efficient, when people show up, get helped and invested in, just to return the favor and help newbies later, since by then, they have a lot to give. If there is a scenario, where old timers or folks who, just as they get a bit warmed up here or bump into a link, want to flee to the unrestricted banter world, I completely understand.

I get ya. You can meet Paul next week. I will be there, we can hang and discuss boredom of academia and muse about real life in totalitarian era..

Well to be honest I'm not disgruntled by the T+C issue. I think it's much ado about nothing.

I wouldn't have minded about the economisto issue if the paragraph wasn't worded so badly.

I find it hilarious that so many young'uns in EF are so keen to go check out the other forum...
Because they have been SO affected by the T&Cs...

TBF, I've not seen any advertising for sites before Bob brought upthe fact that there was one and there was a cascade of "Where's that?" posts.

I was only aware that there was another site becasue of a passing comment on StC and later there was a post on Facebook.

I'm not disagreeing with you, by the way. I agree that would be bad manners to promote a rival site on here.

Whether, personally, I'd ban passing mentions is slightly more grey.
BUT wasn't it extremely bad manners for Editor Bob to have insulted Economisto? Even more so in that he is no longer a member of EF and thus unable to defend himself, even if he could be bothered to do so.

The whole affair is sad, I will miss my colleague, that's for sure..If you are reading it, hope we can have a drink together one day.

I do, however, understand the pressure and disappointment, an admin can face when he finds just a major hole in his team. All the possible scenarios that could have happen, possible motives of interested parties, super sensitive info that was exposed to a person who you start thinking you didn't even know, even if this was just hypothetical, still, for EB a very real stuff to think about considering what internet menace we are facing every day...

So, if things got exposed in that announcement thread, over justified and over explained, and frustration and nerves took over the better part of the announcer, and personal worries were made public, not that it was kosher and I don't want to excuse nor judge, but on human level, I get it. It seemed to be proportional to the surprise we got. It surely could have been worded better and sans the iffy stuff, hence the apology.

It's not like we have control of our expressive skills here at all times...
