Not sure how much experience you have with totalitarian regimes, but mine is extensive . To make that analogy with how freely we discuss stuff here seems slightly bizarro. Plus, the members are not executed by the establishment, but self deleted by themselves.
They won't let users name other forums that are of direct interest and value to the users. They are deleting posts that refer to the supposed "competition", even elliptically. This is how it starts. The axeing of economisto today was like a cyber mock execution. No trial, that's for sure, but lots of propaganda and a vitriolic personal attack.

My work takes me often to the middle east. Specifically, I do a lot of field work in Syria, Egypt, Azerbaijan etc. Places that are police states. Clearly, the stakes here and there are very different, but the policies are similar.

Re: Thread split following economisto's removal

Those Thursday highlights again in short:

1) It rained a bit around 10am.
2) Had some broccoli for lunch.
3) Made a few calls.
4) Checked out the NY Times on-line.
5) Thought about going to the local store.
6) Neighbor dropped in for coffee.
7) Postman needed a signature for a box from Amazon.
8) Made a few more calls.
9) Kids came home from school.
10) New episode of the Simpsons on the tube.

Etc.

216) Read that some guy "did the unmentionable" on the Internet and lots of people I don't know seem a little uptight about it. Cruel world.
217) It's Friday tomorrow.
218) Is that a crack up by the light fitting or a spider?

We do, don't we, meanies us. You have no idea how many disguised sneaky ads we have had here...pseudo reports, pseudo IDs, just to have the link/name made public in print, specifically here, and all due to high traffic here they are trying to increase there..Info gets to people who need it, surely does, since there is a lot communicated through pm. Often, when I delete a link/name/pseudo customer review, I actually direct people to pm-ing.

You mean the harakiri self executed after being de-modded? I do regret him doing it, surely do. On the other hand, it seemed as the only honorable thing to do, considering the circumstances..Maybe I will see it differently, later, but for now, losing my colleague is scheisse, but the situation seems pretty crystal clear..

Nah, don't read so much Kafka. I saw no propaganda, a dissapointed boss, who saw somebody carbon copying our platform, imprinting it elsewhere. That does not fly, in any biz. And I get the shock, since we are a small, relatively cozy team of a few of us, dealing with relatively high numbers of posts and huge community, so we need trust and relying on eachother more than just mere users. It might not be so obvious from the user point of view.

I don't visit totalitarian regimes, I lived it. It was my life. I wouldn't over dramatize this and exaggerate, I have zero secret agents of state police chasing me no more, phew, so I do have to chuckle over the analogies made. Seriously, come to ZU next week, we can share...It's interesting.

This clearly isn't a case of such speech being "advertising." This issue has been given a "special" status because it's perceived as competition. Your argument is disingenuous, even if unintentional.

I can say, for example, "Today I went to Migros, and I hated it because their selection is limited, and the cashiers are grumpy."

But, could I say, "I hate 'CheesyTalkForum' (not real name) because it has a poor user-interface?"

P.S. Living somewhere in a village for 3/4 months a year and working all year to help those people make the preservation of their cultural heritage sustainable is "visiting" for you. Feels a bit more involved to me...

Don't get me started! The Riders suck this season. We get Fantuz back and he gets injured. No idea who I want to win now, I guess the Als will get take it back to Montréal again. Calvillo rocks, even though he's not on my team.

Back on thread, um, yeah, great forum we have here. The mods let you wander off subject every now and again....

I am not really arguing, just musing over why we have certain rules. I think it does actually go way back to reciprocal measures at some point, but am not sure. Any mention is advertising, by the way. The power of print. Surely, you can go all punk on this, if you wish, but then we will have more work, and pushing people out is not my favorite past time, ugh, unless it's a "zap a spammer" kind of fun..

Which will clearly give some indication to other members who also go to Migros, etc. Would you, though, approach the information desk at Migros wanting to announce publicly to Migros customers that Aldi has cheaper meat today? I doubt it. (they know it, anyways, and still stick to Migros, heh).

Nice, now I know. I like having involved members here.

I still think to go all ballistic over simple rules of not advertising other, aggressively spreading social networks here is a waste of time of our interesting members who can use it to sharing their interesting stories.

We'll be waiting a very long time.

If there's one thing Economisto has, it's dignity. And integrity.

Which is two things.
