Expect much tighter modding / posting content rules ...
Heck, if it increases signal to noise than I'm all for it but you should read some of the PMs we receive from members when we dare to so much as even move a thread to a different area of the Forum, let alone delete an inappropriate post. Some go so far as to even threaten violence. (!)

They won't let users name other forums that are of direct interest and value to the users. They are deleting posts that refer to the supposed "competition", even elliptically. This is how it starts. The axeing of economisto today was like a cyber mock execution. No trial, that's for sure, but lots of propaganda and a vitriolic personal attack.

My work takes me often to the middle east. Specifically, I do a lot of field work in Syria, Egypt, Azerbaijan etc. Places that are police states. Clearly, the stakes here and there are very different, but the policies are similar.
I'll attribute Teh Drama to the late posting hour. Please consider there are often two sides to a story and not all information is public.

Cheers.

Re: Thread split following economisto's removal

Come to think of it, are there actually any rules in the new T&Cs which prohibit mentioning other forums?

Ok, that's just bonkers. I've had a few things moved and deleted but I generally find it more cringeworthy (depending on what I had deleted) than angering. I guess it also helps to know (or know about) the mods in person, they aren't some evil death ray blasting entity, but real people, usually rather nice ones (with a more or less caustic sense humour). Some can be a bit out of line and rude at times, I certainly had a few private spats with our dearly departed but I have learned to take into account the fact that you have to water down anything on the internet quite a bit, the whole anonymous posting behind the safety of the computer screen can bring out pretty nasty stuff you would never say in real life.

Do the Terms specifically say not to share details on how to make a dirty bomb?

yes, because mentioning the name of a forum is exactly like making a dirty bomb. but since you ask, it's probably covered by the not posting anything 'illegal' rule.

You are making a big assumption there - EF and common sense have never usually been mentioned in the same sentence ....

And I added Phil MCR into the mix. Common sense was gone a long time ago there

...now this is true, not only here. Credible threats of violence and even death threats (a Texas specialty), this is also when you call the police.

Mass hissy fits have no exclusivity here either...

You can dismiss a rational critique as "drama" if you like. But from my point of view, it seems like a classification made for your convenience. It is also a bit petty for a moderator to groan a level-headed critique of forum practices. Or perhaps "dramatic?"

Are you saying it was level headed even in the sober light of day?

That wasn't violence, I was merely asking if you had been fully trained in the use of the Obwaldner cheesewire slicing method whilst pinning you face down on the counter for demonstrative purposes. Sales rocketed thereafter.

Some people. Tsk.

Absolutely. I think that I properly contextualized the situation in my comments last night. I said that the stakes involved were very, very different in a police state and an online forum. I commented, however, that there was an eerie parallel in strategies. Restriction of speech, public shamings, hushing or dismissing dissent.

So, is it the "musing" of the moderation staff that we should not complain because the stakes are low here?

I wouldn't jump on the bait, UM. Dramatic analogies might look effective, but people who lived it will disagree..that's life.

Complains are one thing, positive suggestions on improving a community one feels part of, is another. I've seen a lot of anger and dramatic departures, but not many constructive offers.

Police state where people are restricted to having to stay and obey, is a tad different from voluntary membership platform, that has owners and housekeepers who are obliged to stick to certain grid of rules and who actually just gave more freedom to the members than ever before in terms of official self catapulting flounce...

This is really making me laugh. Especially with the "Terms&Conditions" references not only here but also elsewhere .

Hmmm.... Confirming the comparisons to dystopian scenarios rather than disputing them. Big Brother is watchin', y'all.

(For those of you following along at home, "Terms&Conditions" is my tongue in cheek handle at "other" Swiss social media sites. And, yes, this mod just made a reference to that.)
