No matter what you see on either side of the fence, you can see there is much love for the concept of EF and the success of EF.

I think we can all agree to that fact

Really, the EF is threatened in no way by the new forum. Did the sky come falling in when the cheesey forum was set up? Of course it didn't!

EF is still the giant of Swiss forums, whatever else is going on on the internets.

The way some people are talking, you'd think it was the end of EF as we know it!

With the amount of drama that's been created in the last few weeks I wouldn't be surprised if the local just gave up and closed it down.

Which would be a HUGE shame.

The main problem I have with it is that, despite people here saying how they'll post to both (yeah, right - same quality of information on both? Don't kid yourselves) all this will achieve is a diluting of not only the expat community but also the information contained within this online resource
I am one of those who said that so I suppose I'll address this:

With regards to stating that I will post on both, that hasnt changed. But the information will be tailored accordingly for each forum, taking into account its size and the amount of information I want to share. Pulling an example out of mid air: information on a new restaurant will definitely be shared on both forums but maybe a meal that i want to organise to that said restaurant, might not be shared on both. It all depends on how comfortable I will be managing a group size.

Common sense for every forum really isnt it?

The internet is fickle and a forum is only as good as its community behind it. This site has been invaluable in my process of settling down in Switzerland. I've made good friends and met great people off here and some of you have given me hours of belly aches with your posts. I am also touched with private PMs I've received for various posts I've made in the past. I only hope that I can continue paying forward.

I am sorry to see economisto gone - as a mod and lately, as a member. He can be an arrogant toe-rag sometimes but his wit, interesting insights and modding will be missed.

My last word on this matter.

The problem with Giants is they have a poor record against the little guys. I call to the witness stand Jack and David.

Long time lurker privileges. Plus I keep a written journal of significant events and my children tell me lots about this place too.

Not because a few members have left. More because of the storm that has been created over the T+Cs issue and the time and money they have to dedicate to it.

Probably right. But if those who leave are part of the talkative minority and those who join are part of the quiet majority you end up hearing the sound of silence. it's not a matter of numbers.

This is bollocks and inconsistent. My post has been edited for one "rival" site but glocals has been left.
the forum on glocals is so pathetic, maybe it isn't considered a 'rival'? in any case, both StC and this new forum seem to be formed as a result of unhappiness with EF and therefore seen as 'direct rivals'? i'm not an authority on this, just saying what i see to be the case. i.e., StC - post EF6 debacle, ET - post-T&C debacle.

Depends lets say you lose the top 50 daily posters + anyone over 1k posts. These people prop the forum up and make it what it is. They have the knowledge and form the majority of contributions.

I would say if that happened it would be pretty severe for EF, side line is a mods life maybe a little easier

But hardly anyone has left.

Does the forum seem any quieter this morning than last Thursday morning?

Betwen you and me, I suspect that to the beancounters of any multinational, no matter how small that multinational may be, numbers speak very loudly...

I don't have any statistical evidence but only my subjective assessment: the EF has been a less attractive place for me in the last 2 months.
