Membership numbers did drop by at least 400 following the new T&C email. The total was around 56,100 members. At the same time new members joined (or returned). Currently, the numbers are around 100 down on the pre-T&C figure.

More noticable is the drop in the number of members posting. The figure is down from 1280 to 1186 in the last week. This is a far greater percentage drop than the membership figure. If you excluded those who have mainly posted about the new T&C etc. I am sure that the number is quite significant, and will be causing concern to The Local (or it should be)

Probably right. But if those who leave are part of the talkative minority and those who join are part of the quiet majority you end up hearing the sound of silence..
It's interesting how little credit is given to newbies, people who have been quiet because there would be too many oldtimers squabbles..It's all easy to project, I think, now when the wrath hasn't saddled just yet.

Hmmmm....Personally, it's getting tricky, innit. Feels like with all these copycats of EF, done by angry rebels, together with EF, and glo whatever posting and modding on both...reminds me speed dating, swinging parties and the other spreading oneself too thin, loyalty related things.

Sad to see a colleague go, really. Shame. Do I understand the reasons? Possible leaks? Yup. Humans will remain human.

reminds me of a time when retail data was fed into a computer for recommendations and it came up with: "hold christmas every 2 weeks"

maybe a good idea to change T&Cs every couple of months?

  • The other forum was not started by "angry rebels". It was started by people who believe that there is room in Switzerland for a big commercial forum, a cosy chat forum and a small forum where useful insider information may be got without trawling through a million posts to find it.
  • I have always been a member of several different forums. I just have one more in my bookmarks now. What does 'loyalty' have to do with it? I love the Odeon cafe in Zurich, but that doesn't mean I can't drink at the Viadukt, does it?

Re: Thread split following economisto's removal

I am very unhappy on how things are developing. As one of the organizers on the forum it will affect my (free) work for the expat community.

The Expat Community is split onto several forums which means that I have to announce services on different platforms to give members a chance to sign up or just have it on EF and maybe consider a decrease of attendance at my meetings.

It's not a loss for me personally but I guess it'll be a loss for the whole community when social events aren't announced on all Expat Forums.

In the moment there is just too much drama on either side. Lots of backstabbing and sh**. The whole thing is also absorbing a lot of energy which would be better invested in good information about 120000k salaries and questions about brown sugar. Apart from that I wonder how the forum appears to newbies...it looks more like Armageddon than a Expat Forum.
Let's cool the whole thing down for a week, give the LOLCAL People a chance to express themselves and let them deal with the input they receive from the forummembers.

Re: Thread split following economisto's removal

I have absolutely no idea of what is going on here (who is T&C for example), but having zipped, and I do mean zipped, through several posts to try and inform myself of the situation, it would seem that metaphorically-speaking, being on the outside looking in is not such a bad thing!

Almost all of us are - and intend to remain - members of all three forums, so we'll still see your announcements wherever you place them.

I see lots of drama from people who think they have been 'betrayed', but not so much from those who have just gone and set up a new forum instead of just complaining that the EF "aint what it used to be".

Really, there is room for all three forums in Switzerland. I cannot imagine, for the life of me, how this can possibly affect a giant of a forum like EF.

So basically, if I understand this right, all this drama takes place because a clique of old-timers decided to open a PRIVATE forum which is accessible only through personal invitation?!?

Since I've not been invited (I must not belong to the right clique) I have no idea what this new forum really is about, but come on, it can't be concurrence for EF?! What the heck is this fuss about then?!

Edit: I was misled by the link posted previously, this is not restricted to private invite

Re: Thread split following economisto's removal

I can't believe I'm actually joining in a discussion on this (as opposed to just reading the thread in silent wonder...).

I think it's a shame, all this fuss over the last few weeks. To be honest, I nearly left, just before all the T&C matters came up, because of an issue which came up... but I decided that this forum was too good a resource to quit, so just to put my disgruntlement behind me. So when the T&Cs came, I just sighed and came to the same conclusion again...

But I don't think it's going to affect EF in the long term. I went to the 'other place' (strange, as a Cambridge graduate normally that means Oxford...), and it very much reminded me of going to a party where everyone else knows everyone else, and you only know some people slightly, and to complicate matters further some of the other guests are wearing masks. Between the in-jokes and trying to figure out who was who, I quickly decided it's not for me, and I think perhaps other 'newbies' would feel the same (at least I had half a clue what was going on). At least here there's enough non cliquey folk (sorry, but there is a bit of a clique-ish atmosphere sometimes on EF), that those of us who aren't long-term members can still contribute (hopefully in a useful way) and not feel totally left out.

That's not a criticism of this other place (or its inhabitants), just my personal reflection.

To be honest, it all reminds me very much of an Allan Ahlberg poem... something from one of the collections on school life...

It is a public forum, which we are not permitted to name on EF, which is why it appears private.

It has never suggested itself as a private " invitation only" forum.
Given it's rather small size, it is obvious that it won't easily appear on google( at least when I joined).
Who started this myth???

Who started this myth???

One day, Googling for the main character in a famous movie that has an alien in a flying bike basket and adding CH will bring you to the site I'm sure. It's not quite there yet but I'm sure it won't be long.

Waits for this to be deleted even though I have checked that it leads nowhere at the moment.
