"I'm leaving" threads

What does the OP expect? Why do people act surprised (and all morally superior) when the thread crashes?

You walk into a pub full of people, shout "I'm never coming in this pub again, I hate loads of you" and walk out.

You expect things to just carry on as before? This isn't a social engineering experiment where we're all in on the rules. It's a forum full of people who, on average, react in predictable ways.

So anyone fanning the flames by posting a leaving thread, or those joining in the condemnation of the other members, either you really have no clue how people behave, or you KNOW ALREADY how the thread will go but want to act all superior before it gets locked down.

You posted this in Forum Support because the thread you're talking about got locked?

Yeah, because well-respected, longstanding members leave the forum for no reason whatsoever.

Obviously.

Because I'm wondering whether "I'm leaving" threads should be allowed to be threads at all. Maybe they should be automatically locked after the OP.

This means someone leaving can post why, explain what they think is messed up, and it's left at that. Means they can't join in the resulting fun, and means an argument won't ensue.

It's like the "can I live on xxxx CHF" threads but even more predictable.

1. I'm off. I had a great time but it's turned into a childish twitter-fest
2. Bye!
3. Who is the OP?
4. The OP was wonderful and was hounded off.
5-99 We didn't hound him off! Lolcat! KFC!
100 See?

I don't think it does any harm for a long time forum member to state why they are leaving. I mean FFS, people discuss lots of details of their lives and inclinations on the forum, why not why one chooses to leave.

Calm down, dear.

It's more like being in a pub where you like the vibe, until the landlord brings in a bunch of fruit machines to put in one corner, sets up a TV running yesterday's Sky News on a continuous loop, and the bouncers start shouting at regulars who have been seen drinking at the Whetherspoon's down the road. Suddenly you realise that a group of patrons drowns conversation out with laddish jokes and games.

So one of the guys who was never bothering anyone, but had nice stories to tell (and no BS) has had enough and tells folks he's leaving, so they don't have to worry when they realise they haven't seen him around for a while, and leaves - to a less than dignified chorus of "Naaah na na naaah naaah" from the lads' brigade.

What a strange place, you think. That wasn't like this a couple of weeks ago?

Re: "I'm leaving" threads

With the recent migration of longstanding forum members in mind, I had to pluck this line from a recent post:

Quote:
But I have to say, this forum has become very unfriendly especially to new users.
I haven't done a scientific study, but it seems to me that noobs or people who registered but rarely posted are suddenly becoming much more vocal- and are making good posts. Casual observation suggests that the well-respected-long-standing-members were intimidating folks more than the dreaded 'fluff posters'- I'm not saying intentionally- just sayin'.

I was going to say that on the other thread.
Some stats would be nice from a Mod or EB.

Just to point out.. In a 2-3 months this guy has become very prolific.
And of course this girl has done her job as well.

That's a neat analogy, but if you are saying that EF is filled with fruit machines (c'moooon jokes!) and nasty bouncers* and all of a sudden a bunch of dumb louts are telling dumb jokes, I must raise my hand as a dumb lout. I don't see it. It's the same EF I signed on to almost 3 years ago. With the exception that any change is met with dour looks from members who have been here for longer than 3 years. Was the mass migration due to the "horrible quality" of posts from new members or the "horrible" new management? 'Cause they can't seem to make up their mind about who to blame.
