Reporting Spam

Hi guys,
the Moderator team is grateful to those who report spam by clicking on the ikon and write a message in the relevant field.

This message then goes to each Moderator showing both the comment written and giving the link to the post.
The Mod can then click on the link which takes him to the post. He takes a look it and, in most cases, will then hit the Ban and Clean-up button which bans the poster and the IP and removes all the Threads and posts written by this User.

If the User has been a member for some time, or already has 40? posts, a longer proceedure must be used to ban the User and the posts and Threads remain unless they are deleted individually.

If none of the Mods sees the email straight away several people will report the same spam. If a spammer is quick, he can post faster than the Mods can find the posts and delete them anyway.

This leads to situations like this afternoon. I was away from the computer for about an hour and came back to 36 Reported Posts. Theoretically it means that I check each of these emails to see which post is reported and take action. In reality the guy has long since been sent on his way to Banborough, so the whole proceedure of checking them out is a complete waste of time.
However, there could be a message about something quite different in the reported posts list and this could get missed if Mods don't go through them.

A suggestion.
If you see spam -
Report it and 'reply' to spam with 'Reported' or similar remark.
If you see spam which has this 'reported' comment, please refrain from taking any action.
If you see several spam posts by a new member, you can reply to each of them with 'reported' if you have time, but please only report ONE of them with a comment such as 'multiple spam'. OTBC will then remove them all.

Oh, just one more thing.
There is a 30 second cooldown between reporting posts, and not for the spammers.
So, sometimes we lag in reporting.

I'll just stop reporting. It's simpler. Someone else will probably do it.

Sorry, if I've put your nose out of joint. This honestly wasn't my intention.
If most folk agree with you, I'll dump this Thread into Trash.

We really appreciate members helping out here, and I said so. But when a spammer goes on the rampage like that one did at lunch-time, it is contraproductive from a Mod's point of view, when ten people report the same post not realising that someone else already did. That guy wrote five Threads in four minutes!

Dumb question : How do we know if the thread/post is already reported by someone else ?

No, no, please don't! It's interesting to know how things work on 'your' side as a Mod, and the whole point of the 'report' button is to be useful and help the mods, so it's better if we can do it in a way that is really going to help you and not simply adding more work!

Is it only Spam Deputies that see that comment?

I am not one and have never seen it if it applies to all members. In future, however, I will only report a multiple spam poster once.

Actually, most of our true spam reporters already put a reply with a comment like 'spammer' but they don't say that they are reporting it so we aren't sure. Which was the reason for the suggestion to write 'reported'.

All is forgiven. Most EFers probably don't know how it works which is why I thought I'd put it all together on here. Before I started modding it wouldn't have occurred to me that all the spam posts and threads by one 'User' could be removed in a single action. Sometimes it is quite surprising when we 'One Touch Ban and Clean-up' on the grounds of one reported post and see the report along the lines of:
'User Banned, 4 Threads deleted, 10 posts deleted, 15 PM's deleted'. Mark, our founder, was a very clever chap to set that up.

Just for the record, this is why PMs by Newbies are now limited - because we don't know that a spammer is busily sending unsolicited PMs to members left, right and centre and members don't always report them.

The 'comment' is simply the reply in a post after the spam post. Anyone can reply and write it in. Quite a few of our members already write humorous remarks - pity really that they usually go down the drain with the spam thread. If the User cannot be OTBC'd (already too long a member and/or too many posts) and we remove spam 'by hand', a reply post sometimes gets left behind and makes the whole thread read very odly as one 'link' is missing.

Re: Reporting Spam

My Xmas wish (well, one of them) is that you Mods, who I continue to think do a fantastic job and make the forum what it is, become a touch less defensive about not being there all the time.

We know you aren't paid, we know you have jobs and lives and need to take the occasional lav break. I don't think I've ever seen a genuinely attacking or critical email about absence, only the occasional "tongue in cheek" one (like my "are they at a xmas party?" yesterday when I was concerned about one particular thread.

To my mind, you don't need to justify your absence with how long you were away, why you were away and what you were doing......relax, its all good. We know you are good but don't expect omnipotence

Re: Reporting Spam

Perhaps the true solution lies on efficiently deputizing people for spam duties;
You have some that haven't logged in since august. Our founder was clever in another way; he seemed to put constant posters on duty as they were the most likely to catch spam/mod.

The "report" comment solves the problem of multiple reports, but not looking or acting on said report.
It has been stated before by other mods that sometimes they don't have time to look at all.

Re: Reporting Spam

Is it a simple and better coding change that once one person reports a post, the "report" button disappears or changes?

It's more of a change on the receiving end, if it's emailed, the only way to look at it is to go through emails. This means it could theoretically escape/be ignored.

Here is the other rub: The report also works to report rude/harassing posts. Since this is under the judgement of a Mod, a single report might not be sufficient to really eliminate a post. If you eliminate/change the button, you are limiting the expression of concern by the users.

It's all theoretical but you have to cover all bases.
