I wouldn't bother with all the aggravation here for 1K a month, even if it simply meant bending down to pick up the check on the doormat.
I'd say EF is certainly not pulling in just that amount. I'd guess at 20k or more.

Hosting costs - it's on the same server as all the other local properties, I assume? Low costs, volunteer mods, revenue. Spread that across 5-10 properties and you're laughing.

EF with just Google Ads would bring in over $1000 per month in my opinion.
Can a family of 4 live on that in Zurich?

of course it is!

why is the hosting cost for the cine forum so high? are they hosting videos?

a forum is like an internet goldmine, you just collect the ad revenue and users generate the content.
It's a mailing list, sends out about 30 million mails a year, high security no spam ever, 24 x 7 support always running. Huge bandwith available.

So silly question, where is all that income comming from? I remember a mod saying in the other thread he was happy the forum was taken over, otherwise it may not have survived, or words to that effect.

see the ads. there's even a sales team to sell advertising space. why not call up the sales team and ask how much it will cost to run a banner for 1 month

The ads are so subtle I have to really look to find them, as I always look at what's new I don't ever see them!

I don't see any ads on my laptop (I use Firefox), but there are plenty of them if I browse EF on my mobile.

Maybe your PC Firefox has an Ad Blocker installed.

That's funny, people paying for ads that will never been seen, sounds like a growth business to me!

Well, the main reason people install Adblock are those annoying flashing, moving, text-blocking ads. As you can see in the article: "And I doubt anyone would even use Adblock if sites didn’t use misguided flashing, moving, text-blocking ads.".

I got VERY excited when I saw that, finally after all the promises, an announcement was going to be made. What a let down

I used adblockers not only for that reason but also because of how often ads are infested with malware / spyware and other things harmful to my pc. I'd rather not accidentally click on some ad and have all my logins and passwords stolen, along with giving away access to my bank account and whatever all else.

Unfortunately, GoogleAds (whatever) can't be "trusted" to keep things clean, many hosting companies kinda shrug and say "well, it's a googlead thing" and slide the blame off (so can't be trusted to make sure they're hosting clean ads) and the advertisers themselves, well, no clue about what's going on there - how do the ads get infested anyhow?
