What do you think of an anonymous forum?

I have been thinking this for a while now....

As I know a lot of people personally from the forum, i need to be careful what i write at times.

There are possibly private matters which some would like advice on and unfortunately cant, because maybe they dont want their drinking buddys to know during one of the forum get-togethers, or maybe there are even family members on the forum where the advice would be related to them.

Would it maybe be possible to integrate a new sub-forum in the family forum where people can post anonymously? Obviously a mod would still be responsible for that particular section where he could view who posted (in case there is any rule breaking going on), but who is sworn to secrecy.

What is the general consensus?

Re: What do you think of an anonymous forum?

Its a nice idea and it comes from a good place. My only concern is that it could be open to abuse, with people messing around and hiding behind the Anon feature. We'd be deleting posts, sending warnings and generally spending all our time trying to clean the subforum up.

Re: What do you think of an anonymous forum?

A good idea, in principle.
Even if implemented, the mods and admins etc would still be able to see who is behind the anon posts....right ?
Which makes it a moot point...IMO.

What if it was only able to be used by people with, say 100 posts already, people who are using the forum regularly and would not want to be banned.

Also make it clear that the anonymous section is for private matters only and must have nothing to do with the forum itself whatsoever.

May be worth trying and testing, its easy to take it away again if its really not working

As i said, only 1 admin or mod would be responsible for it.

I think each mod has an allocated section of threads to monitor

I seem to recall (but may be mistaken) that a new 'blank' identity has been permitted by mods for someone posing some serious/sensitive personal questions in search of advice.

I can certainly take this up behind the scenes, see what the other Mods and Admin think.

Good in theory, but none of us are able to do this full time. Most of us have jobs, and can only devote so much time to moderation.

It's not exacthy a real name forum to start with, most of the forums I write on are full real names only, it cuts out a huge amount of rubbish!

What about restricting posting to members based on number of posts, rep, thanks count etc?
If someone is in need, it shouldn't matter what their rep, post count or thanks are.

No, we are responsible for all sections.

Alright then. Would be nice if you could ask the other mods what they think. Maybe an idea would be that it is totally anonymous (even from mods), poster can only use it after having posted more than 100 times on the forum, and the post does not show until a mod accepts it first. Then there may be a little more work for the mods in fishing through new posts, but at least the post would not show up for all members if it was abusive or inappropriate in any way.

just an idea...

Are you saying that only the original post would be anonymous?

If only the original post was anonymous and the replies were not, it may not elicit the response desired in the case of sensitive subject matter, as those members with the knowledge/experience in regard to the subject might not want to reply due to their own personal privacy concerns. It might be hard for one to find the willingness to share advice regarding such private concerns, e.g. extramarital affairs, drug use, mental illness, etc. if a member with personal experience knows that his/her EF name is on it, similar to how the original poster did not want his/her name on the OP.

But if you allow all the posts to be anonymous, not only would there be a potential for abuse and much more modding work to be done (as Castro said), but also it would be much more difficult to utilize the quote function for back-and-forth dialogue to result in a clear and easy-to-follow thread.

Hopefully there are ways around those issues since it is a good idea.

Thats true, it may limit the responses, but i think its a system which would never be perfect, but then again, the forum itself isnt perfect but we are all happy with how it works

At least 99.95% of us are, 99.95% of the time!

(but I wouldn't dare post a poll on that)
