I can agree although in my case, the explanation for my choice of user name is: total lack of imagination...... Guess what the 600 means?
Age? Year you were born? IQ? Approximate miles from Mirfield to Titterten, as the crow flies?

Something very cool like 007 but you messed up the order?
Ha! Not really. I was in the office and new to CH. I had just discovered EF and was reading all the posts about life in CH etc. I was desperate to find an apartment as I had just paid yet another hotel invoice which came to exactly (wait for it) 600CHF. Then I had a question about an apartment for rent so I joined up. I couldn't think of a cool name (Expatincowpats was the best I could think of at that time) so I used my first name followed by the next thing I could see.

The rest is history.......

Alright, come on. Let's get it over with and off your chests. Do I hear anything better a Christian website called 600, some other website which must be naughty as my companie's web filter blocked it or a link to a model of a Seat 600D?

I very strongly agree with you matey!!
I signed up for to this forum the first time yesterday and as usual did not have time to complete the formalities.
What do you think we should do to the anonymous ones?
Perhaps I should impale myself on the fence 3 stories below! Or is there a more heinous punishment for us worms?

ok, "interests.".. why would anyone need to know that my interests are collecting vintage pornography and size 7 women's left shoes before I ask if anyone knows where I can buy over ripe mango's in Graubunden
Cause now we'll know why and what you intend to do with that mango.

I think there is no way to make people share more than they are willing to. How do you check for truth, anyways. It also seems to me that it's not the little bits of info one would share in the profile that affects the community cohesion, but all the little bits and pieces we put together about people these few years in their posts, meet ups, events, jokes, banter..You can't force one state it in the profile.

Another things is anonymity, for security reasons. Some people have real names, some silly ones have real photos, ehm ehm, but it depends how safe one feels. Generally speaking, I would stay on the side of caution when sharing anything anywhere online. One cannot make it obligatory, nor sharing over the limit of one's comfort. Usually the ice melts, though, after a few weeks, and people become less prudent. But i completely see, why one wouldn't feel up to sharing a lot of personal details, we all have professional lives to keep separate from social life, etc.

If people do not say enough about themselves and need advice, it's not the profile info that is missing, but a poorly written OP.
Well, for example, when I want to buy something off a member, or agree to meet them at their homes, with others in a bar, or where ever. It might be good if given the opportunity to show their psycho side, or their hate for those over 6 feet tall, in their profiles. I know I have avoided coming to some people's house in the late evening because the way they ticked their boxes made me feel not 100% with trusting them.

Then there are good liars. That I can't do anything against.

But my recent reason for posting this is some of the comments on the forum threads that reminded me of posts I have seen on other websites, where there are people coming from outside(in this case outside of Switzerland or the English speaking realm), and bringing the max of ignorant comments, and would seem to me that they are not even reading the comments and understanding them, just repeating their ideals because of an agenda they want to push. Maybe they are living in Switzerland. But when I post things, personally, it's because I know I could meet any of the members that are hear reading my comments, and have to deal with them on a personal level.

Like a real life situation. And I actually really like that. It's different because contributing to different forums, say a Cooks one, 99.99999999% of the time I will never meet anyone on those sites, and the respect people show one another is different, and kind of thought put into what they say changes.

I think it is harder to make up your understanding of being in Switzerland(even with google maps, and wiki), and there fore adding adding sincere comments about yourself, then it is to actually being here.
And it makes reading other poster's comments more meaningful to me, because I think it is meant more so. Even if it does come from the likes of Adrian or Assassin.

So when I see someone posting non sense, and I read their profile and I can determine the poster is neither here, nor has a remote understanding of the Swiss or Expat experience, I can more easily move on then wasting my time with that person. And not care.

Re: User Profile Info

There seems to be something going on with the posts in the finance section recently, and it relates to the profile information. There have been quite a few newbies starting new threads in that section recently with random questions that they very probably could have found answers to by searching the forum (or using Google). Instead, they start a new thread in the finance section. Though newbies obviously do this from time to time, these threads have another thing in common: the only information they give in their profile is a location. Although there are other members here who also have a scant profile ( ), there seems to be a pattern to this recent spate of new threads by newbies:
  • newbie
  • starts new thread in finance section
  • gives only their location in their profile
  • hasn't posted much else.
Though this might not be the reason for these newbie threads, there are longstanding threads in the finance section that certain companies/individuals might well want to push further down the page. A couple of those threads were bumped earlier this week and this pattern of newbie threads has continued since then.

Some of the newbie threads which have the above points in common:

Tax on Overseas Earnings?

Credit Score Rating/Agency in CH

Suggestions on investment - real estate in la cote or...

how to apply a car loan from bank?

pay taxes for property outside Switzerland?

How to Save My Property Tax In US?

buying gold in zurich

Which canton do I have to register/pay taxes in?

Update my tax declaration after its sent.

Best sterling (GBP pounds) savings account ?

US tax - green card holder

I have noticed recently a lot of new members that have taken EF accounts and that provide almost no information about themselves. Now, while I know there is no way to know if that information provided is truthful or not, it takes away, I feel from the community aspect of this forum, and forum members living in, around, or relations with Switzerland. And I have seen some trolling remarks made by new members that have left maybe one detail about themselves, and have a whole lot of opinions about everyone else.
I understand the lament, but I am one of the culprits.

Not speaking for others, but in my own case, I just don't want to make too much publicly known about my identity and where I live. Nothing very interesting to hide (honest ), but I'm aware that on a public internet forum over a period of time and over a number of posts, we give out a lot of information about our circumstances, families, opinions, interests, work problems, neighbours, hobbies, perhaps even past misdemeanours and so on. Without wanting to sound paranoid, I just don't want to make it easy for work colleagues, sales people, con artists, weirdoes etc etc to work out how to tie in some of this information with a real name and real address -- whatever their motive might be.

And anyway, if it was compulsory to complete fields in a form, I would simply make up stuff.

Sorry!

Re: User Profile Info

I hardly ever read profile info. If I want to know if someone iz serius or not, usually the last ten posts will give me a pretty good idea.

Then again I was here for nine months before I even discovered the Control Panel thingy, so I'm not exactly the sharpest biscuit in the barrel.
