What's a referral? ( vBulletin system software )

I'm not normally interested in the behind the scenes this and that, figures and stats of EF, however I chanced upon the following on the bottom of my Statistics page (sorry copy and paste):

General Information
  • Last Activity: Today 14:23
  • Current Activity: Modifying Options
  • Referrals: 1

Who's referring what to whom?

I've looked around the various editing options and details etc. and can see nothing that relates.

I'm just curious by nature (some would say nosey).

Re: What's a referral?

Funnily enough I've just been updating my profile etc and was wondering the same (although in my case I have no referrals!)

Re: What's a referral?

They are the number of people who, while signing up, wrote your username as the one they heard it from.

On some forums, the Admin may use referral points for incentives.

Re: What's a referral?

I saw no link to FAQ's. How would I navigate there from EF?

..... or is it just something that is known by those who are familiar with the generic vBulletion site?

I was quite interested to read this:

What are referrals? The administrator may have enabled referrals, which allows you to be credited for any new users you invite to the forum.
You gain referrals by promoting vBulletin.org Forum using your unique referral link. The link you should use as your referral link is this:
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/index.php?referrerid=0
Each time someone follows this link to vBulletin.org Forum and registers as a new member, your referral count will be incremented by one. The number of referrals you have can be viewed in your profile.
Your administrator will have more information on any prizes or rewards that may be given out for referrals. Please be courteous when promoting vBulletin.org Forum by not spamming other web sites with your referral link just to gain referrals.
