oh come on, I read that thread and lets face it you had the name and location its simple for you to find the number, people are here to help each other, but not to wipe each others arses.

ooops I guess I'm one of the ones people are moaning about, oh well

ETA I've also noticed that (generally) its the ones that take the most, give the least here
I'm going to jump off this thread before I get upset. I give plenty back here, and because I asked for a phone # I'm dissed? It just illustrates how the internet has changed the way we interact. I can just imagine in real life if my neighbor asked me for a reco on a place and I told him the name of the place -- "cool, can you give me the location or number"? --- dude, I just told you the name, go google it! Or on the street, 'I like your shoes', where did you get them? At XXX. Great, where is that from here -- I just told you the name, google it! At least people opt to be on the Forum to help.

seriously?? look, for one for us to find the number we'd have to google it too, then post it up for you, or, even quicker, you can do it yourself, really, its not hard

Oh please! Don't let red rep or groans bother you. If I tell you what stupid comments and reasons I got with my lasts red, you'll see how stupid the whole system is... Or how the used of it is.

I have also so many groans from groan festers and drive by groaners, it is a real joke! And I also got groans from real friends too who did it as tit for tat in bantering thread.

I also can get multiples thanks just by saying:

I love you all! Free beer to everyone!

I could have been interested in buying a product off a certain user, but was automatically put off by the amount of red blobs.
Just the other day somebody bought something I offered and said he would trust the product would not be a fake because he'd checked my profile (which includes the reps) so I guess it does influence people.

Re: To what extent does a user's reputation matter to you?

I've carried 3 red blobs for several months because I often walk my dog in the forest without a lead and he hasn't been shot and the other for having a laugh at people who complained about people on public transport.
I don't groan nor do I bad rep, I give thanks to posts that make me laugh out loud or ones that specifically give me an answer or information that I need.
In the end I don't really care what others think but I do think the system is flawed and there are a lot of multiple posters who need to lighten up.

Thanks to whoever removed one of my red blobs for my previous post on this thread. They do look sort of ugly, as if you've done something bad

Re: To what extent does a user's reputation matter to you?

To be honest, it was the red blobs that got my attention, but overall it was searching through why this user was groaned that really put me off ever dealing with them in real life.

Sure, people give out blobs or groans unfairly, but by actually reading why they've triggered this response gives you an idea of what kind of person it is. I'm sure it's easy to see someone's who just given a different opinion, to a real troll, or a nasty piece of work who's always taking the opportunity to put others down.
I just thought, well if this product stops working or I need to ask for more information, this person would probably tell me to bugger off or give a stupid "..well it's your problem now..." kind of response. Why would I expect otherwise when that's all they give to the forum?

I guess I acted the same as I would have in real life. If I really didn't like a salesmen, I wouldn't buy anything from them...

I block everyone who has less than 7500 "thanks". They're just not worth reading. In real life if people wear more red than green I put my palm in their face and walk off.

When I was at secondary school in 70's Britain, "the red blob" used to mean something else.

It is the case. You can't be neg repped (or positive repped) by somebody who has red blobs. They can use the rep system like anybody else and leave comments, however the maximum amount of rep they can give is zero, thus not affecting your reputation level.
OIC. That'll be why I got 'blue' blobbies in those cases then. Now I understand.

Although I think even a zero may affect one's overall rep, which seems to be based on some sort of averaging.

Keep on writing folks, you're all helping me write my degree paper on "Perceived psychology on total strangers I think I know on an internet forum".

Today's chapter "How a bunch of colored dots makes a nobody anybody with lots of green dots".

Next week: "Do people with red dots really get in the fast lane to the devil and can they exorcize the ghost of Christmas past?".

I bow to the highly decorated users of this forum, opinion leaders, the elite, their almost god-like, charismatic and outstanding personalities.

Analogy fail.

When you post a question here, you're already sitting in front of a computer and all it takes to google the number yourself is a few mouse clicks and keystrokes. Asking your neighbor or someone on the street for a phone number or a location is an entirely different situation.

Re: To what extent does a user's reputation matter to you?

I don't usually take the rep thing too seriously. Some people are perpetually red and there are at least two people here I don't really understand why they are red as I thought their posts made a lot of sense. One finally turned green but it was a long time coming.

However, when it comes to buying things: Buyer be ware! I bought something from someone with reds. I read through the few posts this poster had and though there wasn't anything too serious and certainly nothing to justify the reds.

It turned out to be the worst online shopping experiences I've ever had online.
Ah, well, from now on I won't buying anything unless I go pick it up myself and never from anyone with low posts and/or red blobbies.

I'm going to chime in on this one (maybe another thread), but it has been irking me lately. I've noticed a lot of Forum Vets (greens) who just jump on threads to tell the OP to 'google it themselves, what do you think we are here for, to do it for you?' Contributing no added value to the thread.

Recently I groaned at a vet because I asked for a phone number of a place that another member reco-ed. He said "google it, and do you want us to buy the pizza for you too?" He was angry at me for groaning.......
In general I agree with you that some of the old-timers can be pointlessly hostile. I can well understand someone deciding not to answer, but writing a rude response seems too much like an in-joke, and an invitation to be slapped on the back by other rude vets. I don't get it.

That said, I do think it's a little pathetic to go to the trouble of writing a post asking for a phone number.

As a thank you for the initial assistance, the right behaviour might have been to have Googled the number yourself and then posted it to the forum so that others could benefit. Nicer all round, and no groans.
