Crossed the Line

Several days ago I posted an item for sale which was bound to make some members angry. Fair enough, but it is not illegal to buy it or sell it and I explained that I inherited it.

I know many comment on an item for sale, i.e. you can buy it cheaper elsewhere, blah, blah, blah. Fair enough. But for Merry Legs to post a link to a website showing minks being gassed is in my opinion, completely unacceptable and inappropriate.

I have deleted the thread. If the moderators want to make a list of items which cannot be offered for sale, that's fine. But as long as a member posts an item which can be sold, I think the guidelines should be that if others have something useful to add, or relevant, fine, post away. But if someone's post is meant only to be inflammatory, it should not be permitted.

Re: Crossed the Line

I saw the post. I'm not sure it was *meant* to be inflammatory, it was a link not a tirade. I'm glad I saw it.

The nature of what you were selling was controversial, you knew that. And it's tricky, drawing the line on what kind of responses you get on a public 'forum'. I'm surprised at some responses to some things myself.

But I understand you being upset.

Tricky one. I'll be interested in seeing what you (the forum) decide here.

From what I saw on that thread (probably early yesterday afternoon was the last time I read it) most of the posts were positive/neutral.

There was a post which gave a link to mink farming in Spain - with footage of the minks being pulled out of their cages.

The world of today man....

In the 21st century we have Christian wars, bombings, genocide, wars as never before, people get their countries stolen and killed until the very last dies, smart and deadly weapons that can blow up the whole Earth 20 times...

But, yet, the biggest problem is when a person tries to sell his inherited Mink coat. JFC.

Re: Crossed the Line

Why was the link unacceptable and inappropriate? I havent clicked it, but I dont understand how that crosses any line.

I was drawn to this thread by the title as one poster serving some time crossed the line yesterday and suspected they had done it with several others.

But i dont see any issue with someone posting a link to enlighten others or you as to how minks are sometimes killed to make items such as your inherited coat. Any potential buyer will still buy, and any animal welfare campaigner will still campaign.

It's sad, but, it's not like you are the one doing the maiming. Likewise, as someone on the thread said, its happened, its been made, its been inherited, so no point crying about it now. Yes its sad, but, the fight against animal cruelty should not take place on this battle ground / forum.

I feel the forum should allow freedom of ones opinions, providing they dont cross the line with genuine racism, illegal activity or ignorant and homophobic abuses.

Re: Crossed the Line

you have the right to sell your coat.

someone else has the right to post a link to a video about how it was made.

sounds fair to me.

and if it is the same video that i've seen, to me it doesn't even support the argument against mink. as one commenter to the video remarked: "i work on a mink ranch. It's not a horror movie with scary sounds like you added here. We raise them in huge cages, they get fed super-quality food, better than 90% of people get, then, after a year or so, they painlessly die. I'm all for preventing animal cruelty, but they live a happy life, then die fast and painless."

people against mink, should logically, be supporting the sale of 2nd hand mink as it adds to the supply of mink and so potentially reduces the demand for new mink to be produced. but then again, these animal extremists couldn't string a coherent argument together even if they had the couple of brain cells required to do so...

Re: Crossed the Line

EF is not a classified sales website. It is a community website that happens to have a for sale forum. I would limit all ads to either free items or a maximum of say, CHF20 per item. That way much of the over-priced / ethical agro would be removed.

After all EF doesn't make a bean from items for sale and the mods have extra work policing items for sale...

Two things:

- there's no 'logic' involved - as I said on the original post, everyone has their own comfort limit, it's a personal thing and not enforced by some other person's idea of logic. In this case, you're talking about demand - demand for new is generally much less acceptable than demand for already existing - that's your idea of logical.

- you don't have to be an animal extremist to be uncomfortable about the way some animals are treated for some specific purposes. Shall I post a link to a cat being immersed alive in a Chinese restaurant so it can be skinned (alive) and prepped for dinner? No, obviously I won't. But you get my point.

The next time, simply report the post and we'll take care of it. For the insipid self-righteous comments, just ignore them. FYI - Last time I was in Paris, I had sharkfin dumpling...hate on this haters..mwwahahahahah!

well, whoever posted that can be happy that anyone wanting to buy a mink coat will have to get new Minks killed instead of re-using an existing coat. well done.

Re: Crossed the Line

If I was inheriting a fur coat, after all the campains showing how animals are treated and skinned alive, I would put fire on it and burn it. As simple as that. I didn't see the video but I think it's a good thing that someone posted it and if you get upset about it, it might be because somewhere you know all that and you still want to sell it.

You are very quick to judge. What makes you think the proceeds from the sale were not going to a worthy cause?

Re: Crossed the Line

My concerns don't go to the old fur one wants to sell and/or recycle. I think it is actually a great idea. I think it is the new furs the problem.

But where to cross the line? If it is bad to wear fur, new or old, shouldn't wearing leather jackets, shoes, belt be as bad?

I have a problem with killing an animal for the sake of the skin/fur only and leave the rest wasted. But if it is used for oil, meat, meds, etc. I don't see a problem.
