1. Just don't log on here again. You cannot delete.
2. Ask a Mod to suspend your account.
3. Really insult people and you will be banned forever.
4. Didn't you know? ALL your scribbles here belong to The Local. Just like Facebook.

Gastro, try this: http://www.englishforum.ch/profile.php?do=editoptions
And down the bottom of the settings screen add the international (off topic) forum to your ignore list. It's not relevant to Switzerland and most of the stupid polarised arguments happen in there.
And then keep using EF as it was intended.

It is a shame to see that you are leaving but fully understand your decision to do so.

Only option you have is to stop logging in and using the EF.
Reason: Can you imagine the holes left in threads if everybody that wanted to could delete their user... thus their posts too... Leaving many threads without logical post order or understandable meaning.

i.e. Rather than saying "banned" next to an account name, it would say "retired" or something.
I understand why The Local doesn't do this . . . the user population keeps growing and can't go down much.

by deleting your account you're saying I don't want to be part of the EF.

I understand when people do not want to come back, for sure. It's like any other group dynamics.
I think it is more practical to simply not log in and just give yourself a break. I am not saying OP will do this, but we have had a bunch of folks who swore that they will "never come back" and how useless this place is. It gets a little bit difficult afterwards with reappearing dupes, recycled user names, etc etc. On the other hand it is good to see the community is quality, since it attracts.
Mod jacket off (got tired of the mod hat metaphor), groaning and neg reps are taken too close to one's ego, why? Do you also frown when people virtually pet you and green rep and thank? Naw, one likes it. So we should be able to then put up with some marginal disagreements. If there is a debate with an unpleasant atmosphere, start a better one. If your ethics go against something you saw here, start a debate on the stuff. But flouncing or trying to say a few people represent the entire and giant community does not seem so...conducive. I also know people when protected by anonymity will be more heartless than other times, but then I think it might work the other way, too - kind words, honesty, genuinely open stuff, good jokes, not too much hurtful sarcasm nor other cheap blows.

Hi musicchick, I think GG is angry because of the vile racist filth posted on the Woolwich attack thread which is perfectly understandable.

If one wants to leave and be noticed, leave a statement, why not put it in one's visitors messages.
MG, that thread is being well supervised.

I understand why The Local doesn't do this . . . the user population keeps growing and can't go down much. | | | | | I agree, when I am done with an online account somewhere, I like to be able to delete or disable it. I don't want to have to monitor my EF account periodically to make sure it hasn't been compromised (because no website is immune to hacking!) once I'm out of Switzerland. This doesn't seem to be unreasonable, and this is one of the first online accounts I have where deleting your account seems to have been deemed impossible (kiva is another).
