They represent worthwhile contribution, as assessed by one's peers ........ maybe consider that when posting, don't take it seriously or don't complain, with the realisation that EF world, in the greater part, doesn't really exist.

...... or just get over it.
I don't understand how this is different from using the "thanks" button ...

Can someone try to explain this to me? "Thank" you in advance!

Someone recently gave me bad rep with a positive comment. So sad. If you are going to neg rep (PLZ DON't!) then at least have the decency to cuss me out! LOL (plz don't do that either)

On the right side of your user name there are little squares, one green one in your case, three red ones in the case of the person who started the thread.

When you go to "control panel" if you scroll down you will see who gave you the rep points.

If you go to the right top of a post you will see a small scale icon. You click on that to give someone these points.

If you go into Control Panel, Edit Options, you'll see a box to show signatures. By default it's set off, but if you want to you can change it.

Personally I prefer it left that way. Just takes up extra space.

Re: Reputation ratings is an insult!!

I understand that.

What I don't get is the purpose of having 2 systems to "thank" and "groan".

Why are the thanks and groans not simply converted to red and green (or other colors) little squares with any kind of formula, for example, in a proportion like 10 to 1 or 100 to 1, I don't know, but I'm sure someone could come up with something that would make sense, no?

Ah.... well, that i never even thought about.

Probably a default on the software. You could probably use one or the other or both and they choose to use both on this board.

Simply put there are two different and separate systems for expressing your admiration or loathing of another member. This is historical and both systems serve more or less the same purpose, except one is private and one is public. That's all there is too it.

The groan button is for threads about smoking, tap water, and Religion

It's not really a competition..... but I think the groans actually do factor into the rep system somehow.

The best thing would be if people could just not be a dick in the first place.
Then we wouldn't need the rep system at all.
.... but I'd keep the thanks and groans. They are fun.

I've always understood a thanks to be more an agreement with what the person is saying or an acknowledgement for providing a useful answer to a question.

Green bobbies on the other hand are more a recognition for a well put or particularly well written or courageous post or a deep analysis that goes far beyond merely answering the question, or a post that stands out from the rest of the crowd in a way that a post you would award a thanks simply doesn't.

The two are not really the same.

It is of course possible to send a comment via the rep system and choose not to send rep at all, by setting rep to 0, instead of the default 5. I've done that a few times.

Though I guess sending a pm might be faster if it's a response you want, as you don't get an automatic notification of rep so it might take some time until the person notices.

You mean you don't check your rep religiously every hour just in case anyone's giving you red blobbies?

Really? Do you need to wash your dirty clothes in public? This should be kept private.

Doesn't make you look good to post her comment.
