Formula for Thanks+Rep required. Please Help.

Can someone with a Higher Degree in Mathematics and at least five years’ experience in Statistics, please give me the formula which rules the number of Thanks, Groans and Green and Red Blobs attributed to a post, relevant to the length of post, accuracy of content, effort put into formulating the text plus number of useful links, sought and added.

Even after four years on here, 6000 posts and 8000 thanks, I can see no logical connection whatsoever.

The third post in the Swimming in Switzerland Thread, with helpful advice and quite a few relevant links, brought one single measly thanks.

This off the cuff bit of non-funny, non-interesting, untrue, no links post resulted in 17 thanks and two lots of rep.

Please explain.

More people are married to Swiss than go swimming?

Thanks and groans are subjective and not objective. Maths won't help.

The difference in readership between this http://carolineeaton.com/images/swimmingCEnew.jpg

and this

is significant too.

Make people laugh, feel sad or piss them off to get thanks, groans or rep.

Helpful advice is boring...

Re: Formula for Thanks+Rep required. Please Help.

Don't look for logic where there isn't any, deary.

I personally think it has to do with two things:

1 - The number of eyeballs at any given time. If you post during a peak period with lots of users, you are more likely to get thanks and pretty blobs flying around. If you post off-peak, no one may ever notice the post.

2 - Humor. Funny posts get more reaction than helpful ones (most of the time). If you are adrianlondon you can pretty much expect thanks and blobs every day, by the truckload.

Re: Formula for Thanks+Rep required. Please Help.

Number of thanks = Thanks Impact Factor x Number of Potential Viewers
Number of groans = Groans Impact Factor x Number of Potential Viewers

Where Impact factor ranges from -1 to 1
AND
1 would yield maximum number of thanks / groans
-1 would yield maximum number of thanks / groans
0 impact would yield 0 groans and 0 thanks / groans

Thanks you for the rep in advance

I am going to take a shot at answering you, even though I have nowhere near the status/longevity/rep/thanks of many who could probably say it better:

Your off-the-cuff, somewhat sardonic wittiness (which I found to be hilarious) in the "Have You Ever Dated a Swiss" thread resonated with many members, plus it was posted in a thread which was newly created and "hot" meaning that lots of people saw it.

The swimming thread is an old one (original post was in 2008), and while your post was incredibly informative and helpful, it no longer can be thanked due to age. Further, the group of people that would be searching for that information is rather specific (while the group who would pay attention to a thread about dating a Swiss is a large one as, IMO, it would be a thread with the potential to become a train wreck; I personally love savoring a train wreck thread ). Finally, the pool of members who are looking for information about swimming opportunities/locations are many times new members who do not yet have the rep themselves that allows them to rep you.

In the end, it is pretty subjective, as you can get loads more for a single well-placed LOLcat and not a thing for a truly helpful post.

(Please give me rep and thanks for my witty Lolcat!)

I rep people who don't try too hard to score.. or are genuinely kind or helpful. Usually the funniest folks are merely amusing themselves and you can read it in their style.

It's a silly playworld

Re: Formula for Thanks+Rep required. Please Help.

This is the formula I have used for years:

A + B + C = D

Key:

A = spiderman meme

B = batman meme

C = mildly militant passive aggressive post modern ironic hipster sarcasm

D = thanks and or rep

cheers

3) - Bandwagen syndrome - as in 'jumping on'.

Re: Formula for Thanks+Rep required. Please Help.

No maths or structure involved.
It's completely emotional.

Don't think I've ever given negative rep so I can't answer you.
Nevertheless I do give out a lot of green rep and usually because something touched me or made me laugh.

Rep is an affectionate function.

Re: Formula for Thanks+Rep required. Please Help.

if there is a formula is very ed up, when I look at the rep of some of the biggest trolls I've ever come across, or people who just post stupid pictures all day or 'funny' one liners I despair.

you can become a forum legend with a reputation beyond repute for posting shite day in day out yet be a productive helpful member and all you get is abuse.
