Moving from Social Events to Commercial Events - please clarify

I'm hoping someone can come up with a good explanation as to why I had a thread moved from the Social Events section to the Commercial Events section. My event is by me (a long time EF member), it is open to all EF members, it is a free event and I am not selling anything. I would think this classifies the event as social in nature and not commercial...

Thoughts?

My event posting Now resting in the commercial section...

Jack

Actually yes as I specifically do not want others to think this is a sly way to advertise a business or promote something I am selling...it is not! It is a free event open to everyone and I would like it announced in this manner...

I appreciate your passion for your event, as I have close family and friends with MS.

What I don't appreciate is you starting another thread before the moderator team has had a chance to discuss and get back to you. We are not unreasonable people, but we are not all online 24/7. I didn't even have an opportunity to reply to your PM before you posted this. Please be a little more patient.

Yes, I think you're right - it shouldn't have been moved to commercial. It should have just been deleted, as it's not actually an EF event at all. Links to external event groups like meetup are generally not allowed in Social events, as the intention of those is that they are, as the forum description clearly states, "Events organised by the EF community for the EF community", which this one clearly is not.

So, moving it into commercial was the mod's attempt to be reasonable and not simply delete your post outright. Which would you prefer?

Sorry for offending you...I wasn't trying to stir the pot - I was just interested in getting some clarification - perhaps from other wise EF members who have had this experience in the past...

Hope your acquaintances are doing well with their MS - perhaps they would be interested in finding out more about what I have been doing...

Cheers,
Jack

I see your point...and perhaps it is with some merit. On the other hand, I look at the meet-up group as simply a mechanism to organize meetings/events for specific groups. Perhaps if I would simply modify the post to exclude all mention of the (free) meet-up group then it would be more accepted as a social event... I guess I just view 'commercial' as an implication of money changing hands - am I wrong in this assumption?

Thanks for your input...
Jack

Re: Moving from Social Events to Commercial Events - please clarify

To answer your original question in general terms, we've tried to clarify "commercial" as we see it in the spirit of the forum

Quote:
To clarify, "commercial" refers to any non-personal advertising, this includes businesses, professional services (e.g. tutoring) where an advertiser is seeking customers, trading as a hobby, blogs, clubs, charities, non-profit organisations and any external group seeking to recruit members (including political, religious and spiritual groups).

But (and again, I'm speaking generally) no definition will ever be perfect, and there will always be grey areas.

It's better, I think, for you to continue your dialogue with 3W to discuss the specifics of your event.

It is interesting to see someone who joined EF nearly ten years ago has such a polite and humble manner yet is dealt with so brusquely and in almost a naughty schoolboy fashion in return from people who have been members of the community for a small fraction of that. Perhaps it shows how internet etiquette has changed so quickly over time.

No worries, you didn't offend me. It's fine to ask for clarification. I was just disappointed we'd not finished discussing behind the scenes and it felt a little like crowdsourcing for a different answer. Such misunderstandings can happen when we are only able to read each other's words on a screen.

Respectfully, I disagree. You don't know about our discussions via PM. OP and I have been polite in our PM exchanges. For now the topic is closed while we discuss in private. I will reopen to tomorrow and update.

As promised, reopening the thread to update. Jack has been very polite and easy to work with during this discussion. We have reached a compromise.

He has removed the link in question, and I have moved the thread back to social events.

Here is a link in its new location:

Good news and a good outcome. And as an added bonus, you are also letting us know we are allowed to speak again.

What Jack doesn't understand is that since the Local took over, all posts are now commercial in nature.
