About culture and cultures?

I miss a cultural forum. A Field you can put cultural matters like books, cultural differences or similarities between Swiss people and Brits or English speaking world. There are here and there many discussions on books or over cultural items but scattered all over the forum. Would it be possible, if I’m not the only interested in intercultural dialogue, to build a new forum field about this kind of subject?

Re: About culture and cultures?

The whole forum contains such information and dissemination of the issues. To try and isolate such discussion would probably result in a dry and nonrepresentative abstract discussion.

Why do you want this ?

dave

PS: There is a usenet newsgroup call soc.culture.swiss which may be useful to you, but last time I looked it was spammed with war-related accusations.

Have you looked at the threads in the Complaints forum?

Isn't that the point? What do you get out of a usenet group that is full of spam? Not much.

Hum. Maybe that was a bad phrase... but I think you know what I'm trying to say. What is your point in sending the OP off to a place that is full of spam?

Personally, I think these types of cultural discussions are best done in person.

Re: About culture and cultures?

No, there were some interesting posts on that newsgroup, you dig for it. There are discussions of cultural differences all over this forum, from racism to attitudes to dressing kids in winter.

I don't see what would be gained by creating a separate area for it unless the OP simply wants material for his thesis.

You would a regurgitation of many of the existing threads and issues, without the context and anecdotes that makes the observations interesting.

To be honest I don't know why am arguing this, as its not my decision and I don't really care.

There _were_ interesting discussions. There is only one newsgroup that I find still useful on Usenet. The rest have gone to pot (of the ones I used). I find they are slowly being replaced with this type of forum instead.

I'm not sure that EF is the place for what the OP is looking for. Maybe there is another forum for this type of discussion?

For some cultural discussion but related to language & it's use the OP could try WordReference in the forum section. There are some interesting discussion there related to language usage in different countries that speak the same language.
